Windsor castle

Windsor residence of the monarchs is the biggest castle in the world.

Windsor castle - the residence of British monarchs in Windsor, Berkshire, England. For over 900 years the castle is a firm symbol of the monarchy, perched on a hill in the valley of the river Thames.

It is «the most romantic of all the castles in the world», according to a review of the 17th century writer Samuel Pips.

History

Windsor castle was built by William the Conqueror in the Royal hunting grounds of the time (now it's a Great Windsor Park), after the Norman conquest of England in 1066.

Gradually he grew and was rebuilt and reconstructed subsequent monarchs from Henry II to Elizabeth II.

The restoration after the fire of 1992 brought into the castle modern elements, including a magnificent new interior of the historic chamber of St George and the Jubilee gardens in the Golden jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

Modern time

The Queen and other members of the Royal family continue to be at Windsor castle most of their free time. The castle remains an important place for ceremonies.

Its luxurious interiors are decorated with the most outstanding paintings and works of art from the Royal collection.
