Lesson 5 Places in a hotel

Communication aim: By the end of the lesson students should be able to speak about the places they were.

Focus on: the verb “to be” in the Past Tense.

Teaching Notes (Straightforward Elementary)

Remember

Be aware of the clarity of your speech and the tone of your voice during every lesson. Showing students your interest, enthusiasm and excitement about teaching them is very important. Maintain eye contact with all students as much as possible. Make smooth, logical transitions between different stages of your lesson. Make sure to get to the classroom 10 minutes before the beginning of the lesson to check/set up the Audio/Video equipment.

Unit 1 – Lesson 5

I. Warming up

1) Greet ss individually as they come in. Let them know that you are glad to meet them.

2) While asking how ss are doing show your interest, ask some extra questions about school, personal affairs, etc.

II. Phonetics

1. Checking h/t: ex.4 Handout 1 Lesson 4. Ask ss to read the words one by one. Praise the ss.

2. Introduce the letter Uu and the sound [˄] (ex.1 h/o1 Lesson 5) The letter Uu gives the sound [˄] in the closed syllable. Distribute the handouts.

3. Read the words with letters in open syllable (ex.2 h/o 1). Revise the sounds [ei], [ai], [ǝu], [I:], [ju:].

4. Read the words with letters in closed syllable (ex.3 h/o 1). Revise the sounds [æ], [e], [o], [I].

H/W: practice reading of the words (ex.4 Handout 1)

III. Grammar ( the verb to be in Past Simple)

1. Checking h/t: WB p. 6 ex. 2, 3. Frontal checking.

2. Introduce the verb “to be” h/o 1 L5 (a table). Ask ss to look at the table. Comment on the forms of the verb “to be” in the Past Tense. Pay attention that we use was in singular and were in plural.

3. Study the rule: ex. 4 h/o 1 Ask ss to study the rule, read and translate the examples.

4. Do ex. 5-6 h/o 1 Frontal checking. Ex.6 Ask questions 1, 3, 5, 6 to ss.

5. Do ex.7 h/o 1 Personalization. Ask the ss to choose 2 questions from each group and to ask their partners. Report back.

H/W: ex.8 h/o 1, ex.9 h/o 1

IV. Vocabulary (Places in a hotel)

1. Checking h/t: WB p.6 ex.1, SB p.9 ex.1 translate the words from the box, ex.1,2 write a/an or nothing, make the words plural. Frontal checking.

2. Introduce places. Study the essential vocabulary. (ex.10 Handout 1). Ask ss to look at the words, listen and repeat, match. Help ss to translate the words they don't know.

3. Miming game. Ask one of the ss to show the place for the others to guess it.

4. “Lost and Found” game. Prepare the sheets of paper beforehand. Ask ss to put on the sheets of paper the place where they were yesterday and the thing they lost. Then ss get one of the sheet of paper and find out whose it is, asking: Were you in ….? Is it your...? The game is finished when everybody has got his/her sheet of paper. Fluid pairs.

V. Listening and speaking:

1) Pre-listening: SB p.18 Ask ss to look at the pictures at p.18 and say what places they see on it.

2) While-listening: a) Do ex. 1 SB p. 18 Ask ss to listen to the conversations and underline the correct place for each one. b) Do ex.2 SB p.18 Ask ss to listen to once again and find out if the underlined information correct or not correct the wrong information.

1. Post-listening: Act out to the model. SB p. 140 Ask ss to open their books at p.140, choose one of the dialogues and act it out.

VI. Video “Wallace and Gromit in a Grand Day out” Episode 1

1. Checking h/t: ex.6 h/o 1 translate the sentences into English. Frontal checking. Ask ss to read the translation of the sentences one by one.

2. 2) Pre-viewing: Copy the pages 6,9 from AB “W. and G.”a) Study the vocabulary ex.1 h/o 2, b) do ex. 1 p. 6 AB “W. and G.” Ask ss to look at the picture and label the words.

3. 3) While-viewing: a)Watch and answer the question. b) Do ex.3 p.6 AB “W. and G.” Ask ss to read after you, translate, then watch and tick what countries Wallace say.

4. Post-viewing: do ex.3 p.9 AB “W. and G.” Ask ss to look at the pictures and make conversations.

H/W: Look at the picture from ex. 3 on page 6 and answer the questions (ex. 3 h/o 2)

H/W The home task must be given after each stage of the lesson. At the end of the lesson sum up all the home task, thank the students for their work, ask about their impressions, what was the least or most difficult, if the tempo and the speech is okay or too fast/slow, etc.
