The Citadel”

“The Citadel” is one of A.J. Cronin`s most famous novels, and has never been out of print since it was first published in 1937. The book is set in Southern England and tells the story of a doctor, Andrew Manson. At first, the enthusiastic young man disapproves of doctors who are not sufficiently qualified and do not care about treating patients properly. He criticises the fact that they are only after money. At some point though, his enthusiasm for medcine is deverted into a desire to become rich. The central theme of the book is Andrew`s struggle between his ideals and interest in money. Which one will win in the end? You`ll have to read the book and find out. “The Citadel” is a well written book. It has excellent character discriptions. Through Andrew`s character and career, Cronin exposes some very unpleasant facts about the medical profession. The contrast between characters and events make “The Citadel” a powerful nowel. Anyone who believes in a fair and just society would love it. I definittly recommend it.
