Sokolsky district

Sokolsky district is located on the left bank of the river Volga, on the Unzhensky lowland.

The first version is the following. In the ancient times there lived tribes who built strong, high-speed, chiseling out of court boats which were called «sokolki» and they were used for predatory purposes.

The settlement got its name due to KuzmaMinin and Dmitry Pozharsky. During the Nizhegorodsky militiatransition in 1611-1613 the settlement Sokolsky was called «Sokoliki». The main reason was that there lived a lot of beautiful falcons in the vast forests on the left bank of the Volga.

At the end of the 19 th century there were 34 yards and 269 inhabitants in Sokolsky. There were two main streets: Front and Back.

The settlement grew rapidly every century. Each generation made a great contribution into the development, keeping all old traditions.

It is difficult to believe that some time ago there lived the count dynasty of the Musin-Pushkins.

“ Victory Park”

Sokolsky district has been grown and developed much in recent years. On the one hand, it is still rich in its nature resources: water and forests are supposed to be the most important property of the district.

There is also a museum, the former building of merchant Tsvetkova.

We can also find a wonderful library, which was called in honor of Pushkin.

In 2011 a great sport and recreation centre was built here. It is equipped with an ice arena, a swimming pool, a tennis hall, sports hall and a cinema.

Okhapkin Valery Anatolevich , an honored worker of culture of the USSR, is commonly known as a talented accordion player, a brilliant singer, a creative composer and an outstanding leader TV programs. Also he is regarded as one of the founders of the famous ensemble “ Balagur ” .

The heroes of the Soviet Union are Petrov Semyon Ivanovich and Sokolov Aleksey Nikolayevich.
