The Use of Gerunds in English

Gerund

Герундий неличная форма глагола, которая имеется в английском, но отсутствует в русском языке.

1. Children, stop talking!

2. Smoking strong tobacco is always harmful.

3. Talking with you is a real pleasure.

4. We like playing tennis.

5. She preferred staying at home.

6. He insisted on doing it quickly.

7. They spoke about visiting their friend.

8. Her task was looking after children.

9. I think of making her a present.

10. I object to his playing football all day long.

11. Travelling is very interesting in any season.

12. My favorite sport is skiing.

13. I like swimming.

14. Thank you for ringing to me.

15. Go on reading the text.

16. I prefer walking in the forest.

17. I like reading tales.

18. We are thinking of going on hike during our trip.

19. Did your mother permit to your participating?

20. They spoke about visiting their friend on Monday.

21. I don’t like walking slowly.

22. I like her swimming in our pool.

23. We watched his playing in the game.

24. They told much about his helping on weekend.

25. I understand her trying to enter the university.

После многих глаголов только герундий используется: Avoid - избегать, delay- задерживать, finish- заканчивать, postpone- откладывать, put off - откладывать, go on- продолжать, give up- прекращать, excuse- извинять, mind- иметь против, возражать

1. Avoid using this word!

2. They delayed starting to the South.

3. I don’t want to postpone writing the composition.

4. It is time for me to finish helping you.

5. My uncle does not want to give up shooting.

6. We shall put off answering the questions.

7. Please excuse us interrupting you.

8. Why did she not go on speaking?

9. Do you mind my playing the piano?

10. The girl kept on bothering them.

После ряда глаголов может стоять как герундий так и инфинитив: Start -начать, begin- начать, continue- продолжать, like-нравиться, love- любить, hate- ненавидеть, detest- не любить, prefer - предпочитать, intend- намереваться

1. They started discussing (to discuss) that question.

2. We shall soon begin to study (studying) a new text.

3. Paul continued to make (making) his report.

4. I like singing (to sing) folk songs.

5. Mother loved scolding (to scold) us in joke.

6. The children hated to walk (walking) the long way to the station.

7. She detests sitting (to sit) idly.

8. We prefer to do (doing) it ourselves.

9.They intended speaking (to speak) to them.

Употребление инфинитива или герундия после глаголов stop, remember, forget меняет смысл всего предложения:

1. He stopped smoking. – Он перестал курить.

2. He stopped to smoke.- Он остановился, чтобы закурить.

3. I remember seeing you somewhere.- Я помню, что видел вас где-то.

4. I remember to see you soon.- Я помню, что мне нужно вас вскоре навестить.

5. He forgot opening the window.- Он забыл, что открыл окно.

6. He forgot to open the window.- Он забыл открыть окно.

Translate into English:

1. То, что вы скоро уезжаете, не должно помешать вашим занятиям.

2. Простите, что я перебиваю вас.

3. Когда она вошла в комнату, то увидела разбитую чашку.

4. Буря помешала нам приехать вовремя.

5. Он не будет возражать, если я закрою окно?

6. Я помню, что оставила ключ на столе.
