National Gendarmerie

It is a military police force which serves for the most part as a rural and general purpose police force. It encompasses the counter terrorist units of the Parachute Intervention Squadron of the National Gendarmerie and the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group. One of the French intelligence units, the Directorate-General for External Security reports to the Ministry of Defence. The other, the Central Directorate of Interior Intelligence, reports directly to the Ministry of the Interior.

Judicial branch

The Constitutional Council

Neither judicial nor administrative courts are empowered to rule on the constitutionality of acts of Parliament. While technically not part of the judicial branch, the Constitutional Council examines legislation and decides whether or not it violates the Constitution

Law of France

France uses a civil legal system. Basic principles of the rule of law were laid in the Napoleonic Code. Law should only prohibit actions detrimental to society. France does not recognize religious law as a motivation for the enactment of prohibitions.

Civil law

The term civil law in France refers toprivate law, and should be distinguished from the group of legal systems descended from Roman Law known as civil law, as opposed to common law. The body of statutes and laws governing civil law and procedure are set out in the Civil Code of France., although other private law statutes are located in different codes
