-Dear Friends! We are glad to have gathered here today,
-for the more we get together, the happier we are.
-Today we suggest going on a journey.
-We have already been to the country of Alan Milne and Rudyard Kipling, we’ve made a musical travel to the history of the USA.
-Today we would like to take you on a journey to the country of Robert Burns:
-the national bard of Scotland
-one of the world’s great songwriters
-the hero of the Scots and the people of the Scottish descent.

- These lines belong to the well known English poet John Keats. They were written in Scotland in a small cottage at Alloway in Ayrshire where on the 25 of January 1759 was born Robert Burns.

- In those cosy rooms of his home with their thick walls and little windows young Robert first heard the folk songs of his country from the tuneful voice of his mother Agnes Brown. She was always singing as she went about her heavy work of the day. She had a wonderful voice, and a good stock of songs and ballads which she passed on to her children.
-To supplement her own repertoire, Mrs.Burns had at her elbow an elderly relative named Betty Davidson, a regular visitor who aided her in her domestic work.

Burns owed much to his father, a poor man as he had no land of his own and a rich man if valued in character, independence, in thought and action.

-William Burns taught his family with extraordinary care and thoroughness. Robert was sent to school from the age of six.
-When the local teacher left to take up a better post, it was William Burns who travelled to seek a replacement for him. Robert’s new teacher John Murdoch gave him access to the printer word.

Уильям Уоллес был младшим сыном мелкопоместного шотландского рыцаря - сэра Малкольма Уоллеса, который был вассалом лорда Джеймса Стюарта, происходящего из рода будущих шотландских королей.
В 1296 году армия английского короля Эдуарда I вторглась в Шотландию и завоевала всю страну. Законный король Шотландии Иоанн I был вынужден отречься от престола, и Шотландия оказалась под властью Англии. Однако уже в следующем, 1297 году, в стране сразу в нескольких местах вспыхнуло восстание против английской оккупации. На юге его возглавил Уильям Уоллес. Движение быстро стало общенациональным.
11 сентября 1297 года отряды Уоллеса наголову разбили карательную экспедицию графа Суррея на Стерлингском мосту. Английские войска были застигнуты на переправе и разбиты окружившими их шотландцами. Большая часть страны была освобождена. Уоллеса избрали Хранителем Шотландии в отсутствие короля Иоанна I. Влияние Уоллеса опиралось на его колоссальную популярность и народное ополчение, которое после победы при Стерлинге подчинялось только Уоллесу.

Шотландская песня “Charlie Is My Darling”
В 1298 году Эдуард I вновь вторгся в Шотландию. Король привёл свыше 12 тысяч воинов и в недолгой битве разбил Повстанческую армию, в то время не имевшую единого командования. Существует версия, что подкупленные королем шотландские лорды в самый решающий момент , увели с поля боя личные дружины, бросив Уоллеса и народное ополчение. В течение нескольких лет велась партизанская война. В 1305 году Уоллес был предан шотландским рыцарем Джоном де Ментейсом, арестован англичанами и жестоко казнен.

-For some years Robert Burns worked on the family farm ploughing and reaping. He worked far beyond his physical capacity, though he was proud of his work.
...I was the eldest of seven children, and Father worn out by early hardships was unfit to labour. We lived very poorly. I was a dextrous ploughman for my age.)

-When Robert was fourteen he found himself working at the harvest beside a girl of his own age named Nelly Kirkpatrick.
-His heartbeat became stronger when he heard her singing a song. This girl inspired Burns’s first love and first poem.
...”Thus with me began Love and Poesy which at times have been my only, my highest joy”.

-Burns was a young man of 25 when he met Jean Armour during the summer of 1784. She was 19 years old, the daughter of the respectable master mason James Armour.
-Legend relates that Burns was at a dance when Jean’s dog, collie, came to him standing by himself. He remarked that he wished he could find a girl who would show him so much affection and was overheard by Jean.
- A few days later she called to him (across the green) asking laughingly whether he had found the girl he was looking for.

Robert and Jean fell in love with each other and were going to get married.

-But the girl’s father did not want to have a poor peasant as his son-in-law.

- Seeing that there was no way for a poor peasant in Scotland Burns decided to sail for Jamaica in the hope of obtaining a job in some sugar plantation. The poet was very sad about leaving Scotland.

-But before leaving his native country Robert wished to give it something to remember him by.
-So in 1786 he persuaded a printer in the town of Kilmarnock to publish a volume of “Poems Chiefly In the Scottish dialect”. The whole edition of 600 copies was an immediate success.
- The volume was greeted enthusiastically. Burns was invited to his country’s capital. He conquered Edinburgh society by his wit and personality as much as by his verses. He arrived in Edinburgh at the age of 27.

- While in Edinburgh Burns met James Johnson, an enthusiast for Scottish songs who asked for Burns’s help in recreating the Scottish folk songs.
-Burns discovered long lost songs, patched and mended others, wrote new verses for old choruses, reworked old fragments into new songs to existing tunes. He regarded his work as his patriotic duty.
-After another successful edition of his poems Robert Burns set out on his travelling about Scotland. He admired lovely landscapes and historic places of Scotland, got a deep insight into genuine traditions of his native land.
-One of his most familiar poems throughout the world is the address “To a Haggis” – a dish of ordinary people made from an offal of the ship, cooked in its stomach with oatmeal and onions. Today thanks to Robert Burns it has become fashionable.

-Some verses of the poet were inspired by the Great French Revolution, which he supported with all his heart.

-In 1789 Burns now 30 bought a farm on the banks of the river Nith not far from the town of Dumphries. He went back to farming and his own kind of poetry.

-So this is the Burns country which we associate with Burns’s poetry:
-where men are honest and decent and enjoy a laugh
-where girls are fair and warm-hearted
-where the air of Scotland blows
-where all men are brothers.
- Indeed a fine place to be.
Let’s try to join this wonderful atmosphere of “the country of Burns” and sing one of his songs which is sung throughout the world “Auld Lang Syne”,
