All the world’s a stage
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts.
His acts being seven ages.
At first the infant
Mewling and puling in the nurse’s arms
And then the whining school-boy with his satchel
And shining morning face creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.
And then the lover,
Shining like furnace with woeful ballade
Made to his mistress’s eyebrow.
Last scene of all
That ends this strange eventful history
Is second childishness and mere oblivion
Sands teeth, sands eyes, sands taste, sands everything.
(Cлайд 3) Theatre is a place where people learn to love, respect elders, be kind and just. This is the place where they leave their hearts and souls.
I live in Moscow and my pupils can go to the theater to Moscow several times a year. Visiting a theater is always a happy event in my life. But unfortunately, I noticed that nowadays fewer and fewer children are interested in theatre. With years they visit theatre performances more seldom. I decided to carry out a survey of my pupils’ opinion about theatres. I asked 150 pupils.
(Слайд 4) According to my survey only 1 % of pupils said that they preferred a theatre to a cinema.
(Слайд 5) 41% of pupils said that they visited a theatre rather often, 4 or 5 times a year, while 6% - didn’t go to the theatre at all
(Слайд 6) and 1% of them have never been to the theatre.
(Слайд 7) 84% of pupils go to the theatre with teachers and classmates and only 16% - with parents.
(Слайд 8) Among the reasons why they don’t go to the theatre they named:
-lack of money (31%);
- nobody to go to the theatre with (18%);
- prefer cinema to the theatre (47%);
- get tired after the trip (4%).
(Слайд 9) But in spite of these facts 54% of children said that they wanted to have a theatre in their native town and visit it more often.
This year at our English lessons we learned many interesting things about the life and work of William Shakespeare. We also read that there is a theater in London called the Globe, which is often called Shakespeare Theatre. I became very much interested to know more about this theater and to tell my students about the history of Shakespeare’s Globe.
(Слайд 10) The aim of my work was to learn as much as possible about the Globe and to excite the curiosity of my students in this theme.
(Слайд 11)To fulfill this task:
I got aquainted with the history of the Globe Theatre;
Learned more about the role the theatre played in the life of William Shakespeare.
Found the information about the modern theatre Globe;
Made up several tests to check my students’ knowledge.
After the presentation I am going to ask some of these questions to you.
(Слайд 12) The OLD GLOBE. In the grand Renaissance, at the time of Dante, Shakespeare developed drama on the stage. The great theatre Globe appeared. And from the very beginning The Globe Theatre has always been connected with William Shakespeare.
(Слайд 13) The theatre GLOBE was the English public theatre of the Elizabethan era and it was called the Globe to celebrate the new age of discovery and invention.
(Слайд 14 ) The history of the theatre began in 1599.
(Слайд 15) The theatre was built on the south bank of the river Thames.
(Слайд 16 ) The theatre Globe in London was a polyhedron. It seated about 3000 people.
(Слайд 17) When a new play was to be performed the flag was risen, the trumpet sounded and people started to gather.
( Слайд 18) (FILM )
(Слайд19) The colour coding was also used - a black flag meant a tragedy , white - a comedy and red - a history.
(Слайд 20) But if the weather changed for the worst, the flags were pulled down and the performance was cancelled.
(Слайд 21) In the theatre Globe there was no scenery, very few props, and the only lighting was the daylight that came from the open roof above. That’s why performances were given only in the afternoon.
(Слайд 22) There were no chairs in the stalls and the audience had to stand.
(слайд 23) In the 16th century the boxes along the walls and the upper galleries of the theatre were designed for aristocrats and wealthy people.
(Слайд 24) Costumes were colorful, very rich, often specific and expensive.
(Слайд 25) Women's roles were always played by boys, and the beginning of the performance was often delayed while Desdemona was shaving.
(Cлайд 26) The first theatre building worked only 14 years. In 1613, June 29, it was destroyed by the fire.
(Слайд 27) But the Globe was rebuilt in 1614, a year after the fire.
(Cлайд 28) In 1642, the theatre Globe was closed by Puritans and
(Слайд 29) in 1644, the Globe was destroyed to make way for new houses.
( Слайд 30 ) The history of the New Globe began in 1947
( Слайд 31) when an American actor Sam Wanamaker, came to London and decided to visit the site of the famous Globe Theatre where William Shakespeare had staged his plays.
(Слайд 32) All he found was a plaque on the wall of a brewery: “ Here stood the Globe Playhouse of Shakespeare”
( Слайд 33) The new Globe theatre opened its doors again in 1997.
( Слайд 34) It is located just 230 meters from the place where the first Globe stood and its structure is as authentic as the original one.
(Слайд 35) The modern theatre has a partial roof.
( Слайд 36) The theatre Globe has irremovable decorations with the balcony and side doors, which allow to represent a house and a garden or a field of a battle, and a sea, a forest, a castle, a palace or something else.
( Слайд 37) Shows at the new Globe are staged in much the same way as they were then – with no scenery, spotlights or microphones.
(Слайд 38) Women now play on the stage of the Globe but on special occasions you can see a play as it was in Shakespeare’s days - with men performing all the roles, in the original clothing and without intervals.
( Слайд 39) Nowadays Shakespeare's plays form the basis of the theatrical repertoire in the Globe.
(Слайд 40) The most famous plays are "Othello," "King Lear“ and "Macbeth."
(Слайд 41) Near the modern theatre Globe there is a multimedia museum which is dedicated to the history of the old and the new theatre and the great English poet and playwright - William Shakespeare.
(Слайд 41)Thank you for your attention
(Слайды 43-96) Аnd here is the QUIZ. There are three rounds in our quiz. Try to answer if you can.
(Слайл97) And I’d like to finish my presentation with the words of Mark Rylance, today’s director of the GLOBE :
“The GLOBE is the theatre for the heart, not just the intellect!”
And as for me I want to visit the Globe theatre very much.
