The ancient Yaroslavl starts at a spot that is called, even by now, the Spit – the name for a long narrow cape formed by two rivers. It’s at the Spit formed by the rivers Kotorosl and Volga that the following legend was born…

Legend of foundation of Yaroslavl

In place of Yaroslavl there was the thick forest, where the settlement was the Bear corner. His habitants were engaged in the household, but as chance offers robbed merchant ships swimming on Volga. Prince Yaroslav swim once on Volga, saw that habitants inflicted death to the courts. He ordered a brigade to scare robbers.

After it habitants did not want to adopt this prince, and he had to battle with a female bear which he cut by a pole-axe. Habitants were forced to submit to Yaroslav and build a city in his name.

The Legend of the Yaroslav's the Wise Exploit and Foundation of Yaroslavl

According to the legend incorporated into the modern coats of arms both of Yaroslavl and the Yaroslavl Region, the mighty prince subdued the local pagan inhabitants by killing their sacred animal, a she-bear, in a hand-to-hand combat.

• 1010 a year is the date of foundation of Yaroslavl;
• 1218 a year is formation of Yaroslavl principality;

• 1795 year - the famous monument of Old Russian literature is found « Song of Igor’s Campaign »;
• 1918 a year is the White guard revolt in Yaroslavl ;
• 1963 year, on June, 16 is flight in space of first in the world of woman – cosmonaut ;

• 1967, 2006 year - in Yaroslavl the "October" and "Anniversary" bridges are built through Volga ;
• 1971, 1985 year are successes of Yaroslavl in industrial and social development are marked by Order of Red Colour and Order of October revolution ;
• 2005 year is the historical center of city of Yaroslavl is plugged in the list of objects of the World legacy of YUNESKO ;

Spassky monastery

Yaroslavl starts from the Spassky monastery (Saviour monastery), that was founded in the 12th century at the place where Kotorosl river meets Volga river. The main entrance to the monastery were the Saint gates, that were built in 1516, but were changed since then. The main church of the monastery is also the oldest building left in Yaroslavl: Spaso-Preoprazhensky cathedral (Savior Transfiguration cathedral), which is almost 500 years old. It was built very skilfully in the best traditions of Russian architecture of the time.

Nowadays, on the territory of the monastery there's also a museum of history of Yaroslav region, and an exhibition of ancient Russian paintings, crafts, old hand-written and printed books.

First " Song of Igor's Campaign " was opened by the collector of the Old Russian manuscripts А.И.Мусиным - Pushkin at the end of XVIII age .

In cultural life of the Yaroslavl edge of XVIII age creation of the first Russian national theater was the largest event.
