Mark Twain and His Characters»,
2. Let me introduce our participants. They are the 8th and 9th formers. There are two teams today – «Tom Sawyer» and «Huckleberry Finn»
Here you can see our experts, our English teachers; they are strict but fair. They have special forms to fill in the score of our game.
So, it’s high time to start!
3. Look at our screen. I would like to give you some facts from the biography of the writer. You may take some notes. Be attentive – you will answer the questions using this information.
1) M.T. whose name is known all over the world was born in 1835 in a family of a small-town lawyer in the state of Missouri and died in1910. His real name was Samuel Clemens
2) He spent his childhood in a small town of Hannibal on the Mississippi river. There he went to school and made many friends. He was the leader in all the boy’s games.
3) In 1847 when he was 12 years old his father died. The boy had to leave school and look for a job. For ten years he worked as a printer. All his life Samuel was fond of reading. While he was a printer he spent much time in libraries.
4) Later in 1857 he found a job on a boat and traveled up and down the Mississippi. And there he got his pen-name Mark Twain. It was taken from the call of the depth of the river- “Mark twain” – «две сажени до дна». Clemens worked as a pilot* for more than four years.
5) He spoke about that time as the happiest period of his life and described it in his book «Life on the Mississippi».
6) He saw many people, the whole country passed before his eyes. It helped him to begin to write stories and sent them to newspapers under the name of Mark Twain.
7) Mark Twain did not get a good education, but he knew the folk songs and tales of the Negroes who lived along the Mississippi river, where he grew up.
8) He had a good sense of humour and a rich life experience. He was clever and brave and he had his own point of view.
9) So he showed the position of Negroes in America in the days of slavery in the book «The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn», the second book about Tom Sawyer.
10) M.T. told about the life of poor people in England in the 16th century in his book «The Prince and the Pauper».
11) The book «A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court» («Янки из Коннектикута при дворе короля Артура») is fantastic, but there are many sad pages in it which describe the hard life of English peasants* in the 6th century.
Peasant –
12) In his book «The Adventures of Tom Sawyer» that was published in 1870 M.T. told us about the country life, which was fair and unfair, nice and ugly, kind and rude.

It’s unforgettable I think
10. The portrait of the writer.
I think you agree with me that watching, reading acting the episodes from M Twain’s books we understand better the writer himself. By the way, many of the events described in his books really took place and the characters came from the real life. For example, Tom Sawyer was the portrait of the writer himself. Huckleberry Finn was his friend, and Aunt Polly was the portrait of M. Twain’s mother. Tom’s brother Sid was like his own brother. Now we are able to describe M. Twain as a person.
The last task for our teams: Make up your sentences about M. Twain. You will say them one team after another. Every right sentence will give you one point
11. Dear experts, you have some minutes to count the score.
Aunt Polly, Mrs. Harper go to us! That’s it!
