№1 ACCOMODATION
1) Let’s talk about different types of houses. What type of house do you prefer to live in?
We can hardly say that today there exists a problem of choosing a type of housing. You can easily find something to your taste. Those people who want some privacy can choose a detached house. A detached house can take on any form or style: it can be either a cozy cottage somewhere in the countryside or a luxurious mansion in the suburbs. Anyway living in a detached house means having a lot of free space surrounding the building which belongs only to your family. It also means that all repairs and renovations you have to do on your own. Some people prefer a semi-detached or terraced house. Semi-detached houses are also called duplexes. And as for terraces houses I must admit that you can hardly find them in our country but in Britain they are quite popular. Choosing one of these types people you’ll still have some privacy and free space for the family, but you have to share one or even two walls of your house with the neighbors. Flats in a block of flats are another popular type of housing in our country these days.
They can be of different size: one roomed, two roomed and so on. Their price and upkeep are much cheaper.
But flats can’t provide you and your family with much free space and you’ll undoubtedly have neighbors not only behind your walls but also upstairs and downstairs.
As for me I prefer to live in … a flat. As I’ve already mentioned flats are cheaper and it’s a great advantage of this type of housing. Besides I don’t think that having neighbors is a great problem because you always have somebody to talk to or ask for help. As I consider myself a bit lazy another advantage for me is that flats take less time to tidy up and less strength to upkeep them.
a detached house . To my mind a detached house is a perfect place where nobody can disturb you and you can do whatever you want, where you have free space just for you and your family members. Besides if you have a detached house you can also built a garage or a summer house for your convenience, you can arrange a flowerbeds or even a swimming pool.
2) Do you like the place you live in? Why?
Yes, I do. I live in a modern flat/house. It’s rather convenient to live in it because everything is handy. In our house/flat we’ve got all modern conveniences such as electricity, gas, central heating and water supply.
All the rooms are light, spacious and cozy. Living there makes me feel comfortable and secure.
3) What questions will you ask your friend who is going to move his/her new home?
Is it a modern or a period house?
Are there any modern conveniences?
Is it in a good location?
What’s its biggest advantage?
Are there any disadvantages?
4) Your friend wants to buy a new house. Give him/her some advice on how to do it.
First of all you should find a good estate agency. Then check up the prices on the Net. Also you can look through the ads in the newspapers. Remember that you’d better see the flat/house before you buy it and investigate the area you’re going to move in, how convenient it is for you and your family. And finally you should be careful before signing any papers.
5) How do you see an ideal house/flat?
I imagine my house to be a 2 storey building somewhere in the suburbs. There are lots of fir trees and flowers around the house. In winter it's warm and cozy; in summer there is so much to do outside. I have lots of different electrical appliances in my house and all modern conveniences. They make our life more comfortable. Downstairs I have a lounge with an open fireplace where my family gathers in the evenings and spends time together, a kitchen, a bathroom and a hall. Upstairs there are bedrooms, my study and some guest rooms for our friends and relatives in case they stay at us for a weekend. Also I’d like to have a swimming-pool and a garage outdoors. Maybe I’ll build a summer house or organize a place for barbeque parties and plant a little garden. I think such a house will be an excellent place for me and my family.
