Teacher: Love! Friendship! Happiness! Romance! Beauty!

Today we can say these words because it is an unusual and special day – Saint Valentine's Day. This happy holiday celebrates friendship, love and romance.

Valentine's Day is a good time to think of others whj are important to us – Moms and Dads, grandparents, sisters and brothers, friends and classmates, teachers.

It is a nice time to tell them how much you like them and how you feel.

Student 1: To each and every friend of mine

I'll send a lovely valentine.

Mom, Dad, Sis, and Brother, too

Will receive a heart that says,

“I love you”

Student 2: I have a little Valentine

That someone sent to me

It's pink and white

And red and blue,

And pretty as can be.

Student 1: Forget – me – nots

Are round the edge,

And tiny roses , too;

And such a lovely piece of lace,

The very palest blue.

Student 2: And in the center

There's a heart

As red and red can be!

And on it's written

All in gold, “To you,

With love from Me”

( From “ My Valentine” by M.C. Parsons)

Teacher: Ladies and gentlemen! Good evening! It's lovely to meet you here , at the

Valentine's party! Today you will get to know why this holiday is celebrated all over the world, there will be a short quiz and we will play fun games.

Student 3: Valentine's Day is a holiday which is celebrated in Great Britain, the USA, and in many European countries. St. Valentine's Day has roots in several legends. This is the legend of how St. Valentine's Day began. According to one story, St. Valentine's was a kindly priest named Valentine.

Student 4: When the Roman Emperor Claudius II needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying. Claudius II thought that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars. At that time the priest named Valentine couldn't agree with the emperor's decision. So he decided to marry young couples secretly. This story goes back to about 200 A.D.

Student 1: Another legend tells us that Valentine was a Christian priest in the Roman empire three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ. He had been thrown in prison for his teaching. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he performed a miracle – he cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness the night before he was executed. But he had written a letter to the girl, singing it “From your Valentine”.

Student 2: Some people believe that St. Valentine was the saint patron of birds. The legend tells that birds choose their mates on February the 14th and begin to build their nests on this day.

Student 3: There also was another St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed by the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. While St. Valentine was imprisoned, the children missed him and brought him loving notes. This man was executed on February 14 in 270 A.D. Some people think this is why we exchange friendly and caring messages on this day.

Student 4: Written valentines began around 1400. The oldest one we know of dates 1415. A Frenchman, Charles, Duke of Orleans, was captured by the English in a battle. He was put in prison in the Tower of London. There he wrote valentine poems. Many of them were saved and can be seen today in the British Museum.

Student 1: The custom of sending valentine cards in Europe started in the 1700s. For a long time valentines were made by hand. Commercial valentine cards were first made in the early 1800s. Kate Greenaway, a British artist, was one of the leading creators of valentines. Her valentines are known for her drawings of little children and varied shades of blues and greens that she favored.

Student 2: Now sending valentine cards on the 14th of February has become the most popular way of expressing love, affection and friendship. The ornaments that decorate valentines are symbols of love and friendship. In the languages of symbols, a red or pink heart, pierced with an arrow denoted eternal love. It's the most popular symbol of the holiday of love and romance.

Student 3: Lace symbolizes a net for catching a lover's heart. So if you get a valentine with a piece of lace, it means that a person who sent it passionately in love with you. Lace means “You have caught my heart in a net”

Student 4: Cupid, the Roman god of love, is a symbol of passionate, tender, or playful love. His arrows are invisible and his targets are our hearts. When his arrow hits your heart, you'll fall hopelessly in love with someone.

Student 1: One symbol which has slipped into the background is the true love not. With no beginning and no end, the love knot consists of graceful loops, sometimes in the form of hearts. |It's not easy to invent a true love knot of your own.

Student 2: A ribbon means that a person is tied up. It says “You are tied up” or “You're my girl”. A red rose is the most romantic symbol of love.

Student 3: Nowadays people usually send greeting cards with words of love and affection to their sweethearts, friends and members of their families. They say “Be my Valentine”. They give roses, chocolates and other presents to them. Boys and girls have valentine parties at school or at home.

Student 4: Children decorate their classrooms with bright red paper hearts and celebrate the day with songs, games, poems and a valentine box. They have tea with cakes, candies and cookies made in heart shapes and decorated in pink or red.

Teacher: Dear boys and girls, thank you very much for your interesting story about the history, traditions and symbols of St. Valentine's Day. I think you've got to know a lot of interesting information about this holiday. Let's have a competition on the subjects of this holiday. You are going to have several tasks. Each team will get a red picture in a heart shape if its answer is right. At the end of the competitions we will count the hearts of the teams. Here are huds

And kisses too.

В зале участники и болельщики хором исполняют песню “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”.

T: A pair, consisting of a boy and a girl from each team, can take part in this contest. You should stand face to face at a distance of ten steps. You have to go to each other in turn and compliment each other. For example: “You are very pretty”, “You are very brave”, “You always look wonderful” and so on.

1. You ought to see my Cindy,

She lives way down south;

She's so sweet the honey bees

Swarm around her mouth.

Chorus:

Get along home, Cindy, Cindy,

Get along home, Cindy, Cindy,

Get along home, Cindy, Cindy,

I'll marry you some day.

2. The first I seen my Cindy

She was standing in the door,

Her shoes and stockings in her hand,

Her feet all over the floor.

Chorus:

I wish I was an apple,

A-hinging on a tree,

Every time that Cindy passed

She'd take a bite of me.
