 Christmas   Extremely favorite holidays on the Don territory were Christmas holidays. They were celebrated colorful and bright. But before celebrating Christmas people bore 40 -days fasting, known as the Christmas or Filippov  fasting .

The Old New Year  The Old New Year’s Eve, celebrated on 13 th January, was a very generous evening. The Cossacks boiled vareniky (potato dumplings) and went from house to house singing songs, and from midnight till sunrise they told fortunes.

The Pan-Cake Week   The Pan-Cake Week or Maslenitsa was a cheerful ceremony with round dances, songs and games. It was a hearty week before the Christmas 40 -days fasting. Also Maslenitsa was the holiday when people said goodbye to winter, waited for spring warmth and awakening of the nature.

Easter   Easter was one of the most favorite, colorful and bright holidays of the Don Cossacks. The important place in celebrating Easter occupied an Easter cake and painted eggs .

Cossack’s Horse-Caring  There was one Don Cossack tradition to have a service horse at home – mostly it was a mare.  When a Cossack left home, his wife, sister or sometimes his mother always saddled the horse. When a Cossack came back, one of his women had to unsaddle, feed and give to drink the horse.

Cossack's Dagger  The other tradition was to consider disgrace when a Cossack bought a dagger.  Traditionally a dagger was passed from father to son, given as a present, stolen or just got in a battle .

Don Cossack’s Clothes  One of the main detail characteristics of the Don Cossacks’ way of living was their clothes. They considered clothes as their second body skin. The Cossacks kept clothes clean and tidy. More than that they never allowed themselves to wear other people's clothes.
