What is Social Engineering?

Social engineering is a manipulation technique that exploits human error to gain private information, access, or valuables. In cybercrime, these "human hacking" scams tend to trick unsuspecting users into exposing data, spreading malware infections, or giving access to restricted systems. Attacks can happen online, in person, and via other interactions.

The most common form of social engineering is phishing. Phishing attacks usually come in the form of deceptive emails that look like they're from legitimate sources. The goal is to steal sensitive data like credit card numbers or login information. Another type is baiting, where an attacker leaves a malware-infected physical device, such as a USB flash drive, in a place it's sure to be found. The finder then loads the device onto their computer, unintentionally installing the malware.

To protect yourself, always be cautious about emails requesting personal information. Verify the sender's email address. Never plug an unknown USB drive into your computer. Regularly update your software and use strong, unique passwords.
