LONDON - THE CAPITAL OF GREAT BRITAIN
London is the capital of Great Britain. It is a very old city. It was founded about 2 thousand years ago. London is one of the most famous and interesting cities in Europe. There are lots of places to visit in London. There are a lot of museums, art galleries, cinemas, theatres and lovely parks in London.
It has many sightseen. And we start our tour by Double-decker bus which is the one of the famous thing of London We start from Tower Bridge
- отметили на карте начало пути.
The Bridge, constructed in the 1890s, took its name from the nearby Tower of London. The road over the bridge can be raised to allow ships to pass through. It is one of the most famous sighs of London.
Now we are coming to Tower of London.
The Tower of London is a very old building. It has more than 900 years old. English kings lived in it many years ago, but now it is a museum. Tourists like to visit the tower. It was a fortress, a royal place and later a prison. The ravens are another famous sign. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall.
In front of we can see St Paul's Cathedral
St Paul's Cathedral - is the greatest of English churches, was built in the 17th century. It is the place where heroes of war are buried. Everybody coming to London for the first time wants to see St. Paul's Cathedral. This is the third cathedral with this name which London has had. The two others were burnt down, the first in 1086 and the second in 1666.
From far away you can see the huge dome with a golden ball and cross on the top. The inside of the cathedral is very beautiful. After looking around, you can climb 263 steps to the Whispering Gallery, above the library, which runs round the dome. It is called this because if someone whispers close to the wall on one side, a person with an ear close to the wall on the other side can hear what is said. Then, if you climb another 118 steps, you will be able to stand outside the dome and look over London.
Next sight which we can see this is The British Museum is the largest and richest museum in the world. It was founded in 1753.It has mountains of books. It is packed with books about everything from dinosaurs to space. It has a copy of every book published in this country.
There are many museums in London. One of them is them is the Tate Gallery, which presents modern masters of England and France. There are some fine examples of modern sculpture. There is the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. It has a famous collection of arts of all countries and periods. The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has one of the best picture collections in the world.
So we continue our tour. Next sights it is Trafalgar Square-. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the Square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains [fauntinz] in the square.
So we continue our tour next sight this is The Buckingham Palace-is the Royal residence. It was built in 1703.It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth. There are nearly six hundred rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. Buckingham Palace is like a small town, with a police station, a hospital, a bar, a cinema and a swimming pool. About 7 hundred people work in the Palace.
Next….. Westminster Abbey
It is very old museum. It is more than nine hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there, many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for the Poet’s Corner. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. This church has two tall towers. In 1952 Queen Elizabeth was crowned there.
And now look on the beautiful building This is The Houses of Parliament
They are long grey buildings with towers. The large clock in one of the towers is “Big Ben”. You can hear the sound of “Big Ben” every hour in London The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. The members of the British Parliament Work in these buildings.
This is A telephone box- Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed a telephone box in the 1920s. In 1985 more of them were replaced with modern telephone boxes. People protested so much at the old ones were put back in London. Now you can see them.
In front of we can see Big Bell
The main bell, officially known as the Great Bell, is the largest bell in the tower and part of the Great Clock of Westminster. The bell is better known by the nickname Big Ben. People can get inside the Tower to see the works of Big Ben. The faces of the clock are very large.
Big Ben sticks every quarter of an hour.
Parks of London . Londoners like their parks and proud of them. The parks are full of trees, grass, flowers and water. The largest parks of London are Hyde Park and Regent's Park. Regent's Park contains London Zoo a boating lake and an open-air theatre. Closer to central London are Green Park and St. James's Park. Hyde Park is popular for sports and sometimes open-air concerts. St. James's Park, the oldest London Park, is very beautiful with its trees and flower beds and view of Buckingham Palace. You can see the statue of Peter Pen in Kensington Gardens. Parks are free in LONDON.
And now we can see the most modern and beautiful sighs The London Eye is a top London attraction. It is situated on the River Thames, On a clear day you can see around 40km.
At 150 metres tall, you can look out and see over 55 of London’s main attractions including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace and many others.
You can see so many London attractions at once, it’s no wonder more people visit the London Eye very often.
The most famous shopping centre is Covent Garten
