Вступительное слово учителя.

Good morning! I am glad to see you. Today we are talking about Russian cinematography which is very popular in our country and well-known all over the world. 2016 is announced «The Russian cinematography 2016». And we also support this theme.

I hope our lesson will be interesting and exciting. No doubt, we can call the 20th century of film making. Cinema and films have become an important part of our lives. During our lesson we'll remember the history of cinematography and how cinema influences people's life.

The Russian Cinematography

Pupil 1: History of cinema began in France when two brothers Lumiere in 1895 invented a device for projection and photography. This device was later named the camera, and when it was patented, it was called the cinematograph. At first it was just. The Lumière brothers showed the audience simple scenes, for example , the arrival of a train, a game of cards which lasted for not more than 2 minutes . The first film was shown in Paris on March 22,1896.

Pupil 2: The spreading of cinematography in Russia started with the demonstration of the Lumiere brothers’ film in May, 1896 in St. Petersburg and Moscow and later in Nizhniy Novgorod. Film making industry developed mainly in St. Petersburg and in Moscow and its development is firmly connected with the name of A. Khanzhonkov who founded the first film studios. In the 20s the stars of silent films were V. Kholodnaya, V. Polonski, V. Mashkov and others. The most popular genres of Russian films were historical films, mystery, romance. The first sound film appeared in Russia on May 1, 1931 «Road to life» the director was Nikolay Ekk.

…is a man who has general control of the money for a film but he doesn't direct the actors.

…is a man who writes scripts for films, shows.

… is a woman who pretends to be another person and acts in a film.

Key: (operator), an actor, a  make-up (artist),a director, a stunt (man),a producer, a script (writer),an actress.

Pupil 2: The first Russian film was the seven-minute film called "Stenka Razin". The audience first saw it on October 28,1908. The film "Stenka Razin" was dumb, the scene lasted just a minute, and the film had a duration of about 6 minutes.

Pupil 3: Add a little colour into the black-and-white canvas for the first time decided the legendary Sergei Eisenstein. During the creation of the famous film "The Battleship Potemkin" the director hand-painted red flag in the film. It raised over a ship of the rebellious sailors. The film with a single colored frame came out on the screens in 1925. Sergei Eisenstein came up to idea to held the first Russian film festival and it was held in1935. It was The First Moscow International Festival. Its first prize took the film by the Vasiliev brothers “Chapaev”.

The first fully colorful film was a documentary film «The Victory Parade of 1945». It was taken on a multi-layer colour tape AGFA .


Pupil 4: In the 30-40s was very popular a comical musical genre. The creator of the genre was Grigori Aleksandrov. Films "Jolly fellows" (the Cup of the International film festival in Venice, 1934),

"Volga-Volga" (international prize at the Venice film festival, 1947).

The most famous films of that time of the director Ivan Pyreva, associated with the name of the actress Marina Ladynina. It is still popular films – "Rich bride"(1938),"Meet in the Moscow"(1940).


Cinematography in the Great Patriotic War and post - war years.


Pupils 5: In the war and post - war years. The main role belonged to films describing the events of the Second War. In the films «Wait for me» (1943), «Lad from our city» (1942), « The Battle of Stalingrad» (1949), «Ballad of Soldier», «The Cranes Are Flying» and others we see heroic fights for our Motherland, courageous with strong will and character.

The 1940s also saw a growing number of children’s movies, with fairytales enjoying a special popularity. «The Humpbacked Horse» (1941), «Kashchei the immortal» (1944).


Pupil 6: Later, in the late 1960s and 1970s, Russian directors preferred adventure movies, detective stories and science fiction.

I Step Through Moscow (1963)


Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures (1965) and its sequel, 

Kidnapping, Caucasian Style (1966)


War and Peace (1966–67) Sergei Bondarchuk's adaption of  Tolstoy's novel, with a budget of 8.5 million rubles, a running time of seven hours, and utilizing thousands of extras. It was the first Russian film to receive an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Andrei Rublev (1966) won various international awards, such as FIPRESCI.

The Diamond Arm (1968), the last four comedies, especially Diamond Arm, have contributed a lot of humorous quotes.

The Colour of Pomegranates (1969) had a limited release inside the Soviet Union and wasn't seen abroad until years later, but has received critical acclaim since.

White Sun of the Desert (1970), a classic "Eastern", although with dubious stereotyping of central Asians. It is ritually watched by cosmonauts before launches, and has contributed many quotes to the Russian language such as 'The East is a delicate matter'. Its theme tune became a huge hit.

Gentlemen of Fortune (1972) starring Yevgeny Leonov

The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath! (1975)

Office Romance (1977)

Moscow Does Not Believe In Tears (1979) won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980.


With the onset of Perestroika and Glasnost in the mid-1980s, Soviet films emerged which began to address formerly censored topics, such as drug addiction, The Needle, and sexuality and alienation in Soviet society, Little Vera.
