IV. Основная часть: «Thanksgiving Day».
Teacher: Children, today we have an unusual lesson. Theme of our lesson is
Thanksgiving Day. We know that Thanksgiving Day started as a holiday of
thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies about 400 years
ago. After the United States became an independent country, Congress
introduced one Day of Thanksgiving for the whole nation to celebrate.
Let’s tell about what Thanksgiving Day is. I see that you are ready for this
holiday. Who wants to tell us about this holiday?
Pupil: There is one day a year when all Americans stay at home with their families
and have a big family dinner. It is Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving
Day is one of the most favourite holidays in the United States. Every fourth
Thursday of October American people celebrate this holiday. This day has a
very important meaning in the history of America. The pilgrims celebrated the
first Thanksgiving Day in autumn of 1621.
Pupil: Early in the 17 century, a group of people called the Pilgrims, wanted to
reform and purify England’s churches, so they were persecuted. The Pilgrims
decided to seek refuge in a place that they could create a society that matched
their religious ideas. The pilgrims sailed to America from England, in
September 1620. They came to America for religious freedom. They were
among the first European settlers in America who sailed on “Mayflower” ship
and tried to find the New World.
Pupil: The journey took 65 days and it filled with much difficulty. Bad storms
weakened the ship and caused many leaks. Many passengers were cold and
damp for much of the journey and others were concerned that they wouldn’t
even survive. Though many were sick and one person died, they did make it.
Pupil: On December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and began to
explore the surrounding area for a suitable place to build their colony. They
chose Plymouth because it had an excellent harbor and a large brook in which
to catch fish to eat.
Pupil: They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts in
December 1620. Before the pilgrims arrived to America there were people -
Native American Indians. The Indian began settling in America about 25,000
years ago. They hunted, fished, and farmed to survive. There were many
groups or tribes and each had its own customs and beliefs.
Pupil: The pilgrims had arrived too late to grow many crops. That’s why the pilgrims’
life and first winter in the New World was quite difficult. There was nothing to
eat and nowhere to live. Without fresh food, half of the pilgrims died. In Spring
Native Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant, and survive in
America. They now could hunt, fish and grow plants. In the autumn, 1621 the
pilgrims had a wonderful harvest. They were very thankful and decided to
celebrate this occasion to have a Thanksgiving feast. They prepared a dinner of
turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. During this holiday the tables were full of
fresh food: corn, beans, turkey, venison, pumpkin. They invited their Indian
friends to share the feast, too.
Pupil: Nowadays Americans still celebrate this holiday. Thanksgiving weekend has
become one of the busiest travel periods of the year, because it is a 4 to 5 day
vacation for many schools and some businesses. It has also become the
beginning of the Christmas buying season. Many people today observe the
holiday by watching professional football games, Thanksgiving TV programs
and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade held in New York City.
Pupil: Thanksgiving Day is a time when families gather and enjoy time together.
Many families give thanks to God for his goodness and faithfulness to them.
Regardless of one’s religious beliefs, most families will share a large meal
together of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes,
cranberry sauce, sweet corn and pumpkin pie. Afterwards, family members
may share what they are thankful for that year.
Pupil: The main dish is still turkey and the most popular dessert is a pumpkin pie.
Teacher: Well, children! We know we have a holiday today. But children, don’t
forget to give a treat to your friends. Enjoy Yourself! For this you have 8
minutes.
(Ребята угощают своих учителей, друзей и гостей).
Teacher: That’s OK children, You are the best! But I want to know what happened
when the ship crossed the ocean. What can you tell us about it, Makaeva?
Pupil: At first, the passengers enjoyed good weather at sea. But soon, strong winds
and fierce storms developed. Our ship, the «Mayflower», began to shake and
leak. Finally, one of the main beams broke. Some of the passengers and sailors
were afraid the ship could not cross the ocean. They wanted to return to
England. But others felt confident. «If we do not use all the sails, and if we
repair the main beam we will not sink», they promised. So everyone put his
trust in God, and they all decided to continue. After a long struggle with the
sea, sea «Mayflower» came to land. What a joy the pilgrims had when they
when they realized where they were!
Teacher: Thank you very much. And now, let’s do the next. Bayzanat, come to me,
please. Look at this game.
Read, please, this card.
Pupil: В игре принимают участие две команды. На столе разложены карточки с
числами. Учитель называет число по-английски. Ваша задача – быстрее
соперника взять нужную карточку. Побеждает команда, набравшая
большее количество карточек: 56; 93; 15; 3; 49; 100; 68; 14; 78; 1000; 32;
