3. Reading Text + Comprehension (12 мин) Two Pioneers of Modern Art: Georges Braque and Salvador Dalí Georges Braque (1882–1963)
Georges Braque was a French painter who played a key role in one of the most important art movements of the 20th century — Cubism. Together with Pablo Picasso, he developed this revolutionary style around 1907–1908. In Cubist works, everyday objects — like guitars, bottles, or faces — are shown from multiple viewpoints at the same time. Instead of smooth, realistic images, Braque used sharp angles, flat planes, and geometric shapes such as cubes, cones, and cylinders. His colour palette was often muted or neutral (shades of grey, beige, brown, and black), which helped focus attention on form rather than colour. Braque’s art is abstract, meaning it doesn’t try to copy real life exactly. Instead, it invites the viewer to interpret and reconstruct the image in their mind. His work feels structured, ordered, and full of hidden meaning.
Salvador Dalí (1904–1989)
Salvador Dalí was a Spanish artist known for his surreal, dream-like paintings. He was one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movement, which explored the world of the unconscious mind, dreams, and imagination. Dalí’s art is full of unexpected, bizarre, and fantastical elements — like melting clocks, floating rocks, or figures with drawers coming out of their bodies. His most famous painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), shows soft, drooping clocks in a dry, empty landscape. This image suggests that time is not fixed — it can stretch, bend, or disappear, just like in a dream. Dalí often used vivid colours, precise brushwork, and hyper-realistic details, even though his scenes were completely imaginary. His style creates a strange mix of reality and fantasy, which makes people stop, look closely, and wonder: “What does this mean?”
