Pocket money Should parents give pocket money to teenagers? Some people believe that pocket money can teach children to be responsible. Others are sure that for an inexperienced person who does not know how to handle money, they will only bring problems. Personally, I am convinced that young people need to learn how to handle money from an early age. Firstly, having finances will help the child if he is in a difficult situation. Suppose a teenager meets a dangerous company on the street. If he has pocket money, he can easily get on a bus or take a taxi and leave this dangerous territory. Secondly, pocket money gives the teenager a sense of comfort. If he suddenly gets hungry, the teenager can buy something for a snack. And thirdly, pocket money allows young people to learn how to handle money, this is a valuable skill that will be useful in future life. Own money, even the smallest, allows a teenager to buy what he really wants, such as a game, a bag, or even a phone. These things are usually expensive. This means that a teenager will have to learn how to save money, and this skill may come in handy in the future.

Tasks

1. Conduct a survey. Note what you like to spend money on the most. For example, to visit a cinema or theater, clothes, sweets or chocolate, shoes (sneakers) and more. Compare the responses with the group.

2..Read the text. Find information about where most of the children's pocket money comes from, who spends more money — girls or boys, who saves more — girls or boys. You can also find out what the "begging power" (pester power) is and who has it, and find out about the latest spending trend.

3. Conduct a survey in the classroom. Make questions for a similar survey in your country. To do this, you can use information from the fact file. For example, "How much money do you spend per week?". Ask these questions to classmates.

4. Discuss the arguments for and against the work of teenagers. Choose the ones you agree with. For example: "Work teaches young people to appreciate work. She helps them understand how hard their parents work to buy them things."
