One of the most controversial books. The Curator [kju'reɪtə] of Louvre has been murdered. Near his body, the cops discover a baffling (загадочный) cipher (код, шифр, тайнопись). Professor Robert Langdon is called and is stunned to see the trail of clues set by Leonardo Da Vinci. These clues are visible to all, yet no one can see them as it is hidden beautifully by the great painter. The book calls upon some of the unsolved mysteries of the church which are enough to shake the foundations of Christianity.

This book is the depiction of a woman’s quest for freedom. Having grown up as an orphan in the home of her cruel aunt and at a harsh charity school, a young girl becomes an independent and spirited survivor—qualities that serve her well as governess at Thornfield Hall. Should she stay with him whatever the consequences or follow her convictions, even if it means leaving her beloved?

Santiago is an old man, and many are starting to think that he can no longer fish. He has gone for many months without landing any kind of fish to speak of; and his apprentice, a young man named Manolin, has gone to work for a more prosperous boat. The fisherman sets out into the open sea and goes a little further out than he normally would in his desperation to catch a fish. At noon, a big Marlin takes hold of one of the lines, but the fish is far too big for him to handle.

This famous book is much more than the story of a blood sucking man. It's an interesting study of Victorian mortality (человечество, смертные, род человеческий) and sexuality. Jonathan Harker, incarcerated (удерживаемый) in a Transylvanian castle, has an alluring ( [əˈljʊərɪŋ] обольстительный) but terrifying dream of three women, eager to prey upon him. His host and jailer is none other than Nosferatu or the Un-Dead, controller of the wolves. It is a great horror story in itself.

The story revolves around the main character, Holden Caulfield, a depressed cynic . It further describes his life in New York City and the kind of experiences he had, marked with loneliness. This novel was amidst controversy over its depiction of profane (вульгарный, богохульный) ideas. It's something that not every reader will be able to grasp and/or hold onto, but it's something you'll never forget (even if you hate the book). The novel was first published in 1951.

This book is considered as one of the wittiest books of the 19th century. It is written by a famous Russian writer. He is not known globally but has been a major influence on Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. His only novel is the story of a young man who travels to Russia buying souls (peasants who have died but are still registered as living people in the census records). He purchases them from land owners, to extract loans from government. It's an intelligent take on the rich and self obsessed society which has gossiping housewives, cruel landowners and corrupt officials. It is also considered as Russia's first official novel.

This devastating satire of Soviet life was written during the darkest period of Stalin's regime. Combining two distinct yet interwoven parts-one set in ancient Jerusalem, one in contemporary Moscow-the novel veers from moods of wild theatricality with violent storms, vampire attacks, and a Satanic ball; to such somber scenes as the meeting of Pilate and Yeshua, and the murder of Judas in the moonlit garden of Gethsemane; to the substanceless, circus-like reality of Moscow. Its central characters exist in a world that blends fantasy and chilling realism, an artful collage of grostesqueries, dark comedy, and timeless ethical questions.

This outstanding classic covers racial discrimination, southern class divides and prejudices in a delicately woven tale seen through young eyes. However, the most inspiring undertone of this book is that compassion should never regard skin color. After all, you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb around in his skin and walk around in it. Compassionate, dramatic, and deeply moving, the novel takes readers to the roots of human behavior – to innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hatred, humor and pathos.

That fantasy novel reads like a gripping suspense-filled mystery. It is an extremely interesting and surreal [sə'rɪəl] fantasy world of witchcraft and magic. This world consists of a school where some fascinating subjects related to magic are taught with course books like A Beginners' Guide to Transfiguration and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; Quidditch, a basketball/soccer hybrid game played on flying broomsticks, messenger owls, and an entire bureaucracy for magical people (which determines who gets to perform magic and who doesn't and a prison with guards that feed on human misery).

This book is a portrait of the Jazz Age in all of its decadence (упадок) and excess (неумеренность) and the story of a self-made, self-invented millionaire who has such obsessions as money, ambition, greed, and the promise of new beginnings. It's also a moving story of star-crossed lovers. They meet five years before the novel begins, when she is a legendary young Louisville beauty and he an impoverished officer. They fall in love, but while he serves overseas, she marries the brutal, bullying, but extremely rich man. After the war, the young man devotes himself blindly to the pursuit of wealth by whatever means – and to the pursuit of his love, which amounts to the same thing.
