Generation Gap
Samara 2018
"Each generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it."
Thomas Sowell
Introduction
There have always been great differences between people of younger generation and elders because of their different experiences, opinions, habits and behaviour.
The first reason is...
...misunderstanding.
Pop music, ultra-modern clothes, noisy parties and children`s wish to have more freedom become a block on the way of mutual understanding between adults and teenagers.
How it can be solved?
1. make friendship with them instead of being rude parents;
2. know that the age of your kids is more than a number;
3. never make your child feeling ashamed of the parents;
4. respect children's wishes and unrealistic dreams;
5. believe that your child is unique, not an exact copy of yourself.
For example,
A spoiled and uncontrollable teenager Rachel travelled from San Francisco to spend the summer with her grandmother. This film tells us the story about relationships between generations. There are the grandmother, the mother and the daughter. All of them have different views and problems.
"Georgia Rule"
The second reason is...
...indifference.
On the one hand, parents mind their own business and they are uninvolved in their children's life, they do not express interest in it. But on the other hand, children forget about their old parents and they live their last years all alone.
Pieces of good advice:
1. remember that your family is more precious than pure gold;
2. express your feelings and emotions to your relatives;
3. parents should find at least half an hour daily time to communicate with the child;
4. children should visit and take care of their parents;
5. never let a child promises that you cannot perform.
For instance,
'Remember Me' is an American film.
The third reason is...
...rejection of tradition.
Nowadays most of the young people don't allow rules and principles which were actual 20-30 years ago. They are nihilistic and self-confident. The youth denies all traditions and thinks that they are musty.
Ways of solution:
1. young people should appreciate their grandparents` pieces of advice and opinions, as they have great experience;
2. grandparents should understand that the time has changed and their customs are not popular nowadays;
3. you can compromise and use traditions partly.
For example,
In the most famous Russian novel "Fathers and Sons" Ivan Turgenev shows how one generation denied and did not accept other generation's traditions.
"Our generation has an incredible amount of realism, yet at the same time it loves to complain and not really change. Because, if it does change, then it won't have anything to complain about."
George Bernard Shaw
To sum up,
The situation is not as bad as it seems to be. It is possible to bridge the gap between parents and their children if everyone finds a key to the heart of each other.
