History of the ancient castle
- The history of the castle, built in the county of Northumberland, dates back to the end of the XII century-it was originally built as a convent, but three centuries later it was bought by the noble couple of Gray. The family estate was inherited by the representatives of the dynasty, until in 1298, King Edward I stopped there on his way to Scotland. The British monarch appreciated the strategic location of the castle — it was almost on the border of England and Scotland, which was very convenient for the soldiers of the British army. Since then, Chillingham Castle has become a transit point, which has repeatedly tried to destroy the warring troops, and one of the rooms was named in honor of Edward I — during his first visit, the Gray couple arranged for the monarch a separate room on the top floor, cutting windows in the walls and furnishing the room with luxurious furniture.
Legends of Chillingham Castle
- There was no limit to the brutality of the warring armies — a torture chamber was equipped in the basement of the castle, which, by the way, has been preserved to this day. It was rumored that some of the castle's prisoners did not end up in a dungeon equipped with a torture chamber, but their fate was no better — the slaves were pushed into the family crypt, built near the main building. In it, prisoners were immured alive in the walls, and many tourists who visited the crypt today claim that it was there that they heard the piercing moans of those who ended their days in these walls .
The legend of the "shining" boy
The Spirit of John Sage's Tormentor
Once, while in the castle with his beloved Elizabeth Charlton, Sage suspected her of infidelity and, terribly angry, strangled her in one of the rooms. The father of the unfortunate girl was so desperate that he demanded retribution from the British monarch, otherwise he threatened to unite with the Scots and organize a riot. Accepting the ultimatum, the king agreed to avenge Elizabeth's death, and ordered the execution of the Torturer Sage, as he was called by the locals, right in the castle. Since then, the restless soul of the executed John Sage wanders through the rooms of the castle, frightening its inhabitants with heavy groans and the metal clang of chains that were on his wrists at the time of death, and the official place of his residence is the very dungeon where the soldiers tortured the prisoners.
- The story of one of the most popular ghosts of Chillingham Castle is connected with the crypt — it is believed that the main inhabitant of this cursed place is the ghost of the "shining" boy. According to legend, he appears at night in one of the rooms with a loud cry and goes to the crypt-where during the reconstruction the remains of an adult man and a small boy were found buried alive in the wall.
The Mysterious Spirit of Lady Mary Berkeley
- After her husband's infidelity, the desperate woman could not accept the sad truth — she died a few years later in her bedroom in the castle all alone. According to legend, her ghost regularly descends from the portrait of Lady Mary Berkeley when men appear in Chillingham who are unfaithful to their wives.
