BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CITY (КРАТКАЯ ИСТОРИЯ ГОРОДА)
The city of Toropets in the west of the Tver region is relatively small, but it has a long and heroic history. "Toropets owes its name to the Toropa river, in the old days called Toropitsa, on which it stands." In written sources, the first mention of Toropets as the boundary town of the Smolensk Principality refers to 1074. This year, marked in the Laurentian Chronicle, is considered to be the year of Toropets foundation. The princes did not spare money to strengthen the Toropets, and in the 12th century. here already had its own fortress. This was demanded also by the new status of the city: from 1167 Toropets was the center of the specific principality. The very first prince here was Mstislav the Brave, who ordered to pour defensive shafts. After the death of the prince, the city retired to his son - no less famous hero Mstislav Udalom. "Even then, Toropets began to engage in trade: through the city, the road" from the Varangians to the Greeks "was passing." In the XІІ-ХІІІ centuries. Toropets was in the middle of endless wars with the Lithuanians. Despite the courage of the Toropchan, from the middle of the XIV century. The city was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but in 1503 it moved to the Moscow State. In the XVI-XVII centuries. Toropets was captured and plundered several times by the Poles. After liberation from the Poles, Toropets became famous as a trading city and even entered the Hanseatic League. Especially known were local craftsmen in the manufacture of leather, in addition to handicrafts, the city sold wood. Toropets merchants were known in Germany, Holland, Denmark and even in China. Emperor Peter I appreciated such enterprise, having granted the merchant merchants a privilege: reduced duties. During the years of Soviet power, Toropets was a member of the Kalinin region. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. was on the line of defense of Moscow, within five months was occupied by the Germans, was liberated during the Toropetsko-Kholm offensive operation by units of the North-Western Front. During the war, the city is relatively well preserved. "The city seems to float quietly in time, despite its" hasty "name." Where the Toropa River exits from Solomennogo Lake, the Great Old Fortress is preserved. On the southern outskirts, the mighty ramparts of the High Small Settlement, the oldest defensive structure, are still visible. You can find traces of the fortress, which was surrounded by an earthen rampart, along the edge of which stretched a wooden wall. The fortress was large: with a dozen towers, two cathedrals and four churches, with a siege serving as a refuge for the inhabitants of the city.? In Toropets, there was preserved a historic one-two-story building - both stone and wood - dating back to the period of the XVII-XIX centuries. Since the 1780's. Toropets was built according to a regular plan, but the historical old building was preserved in separate districts. "There are several Orthodox churches in Toropets, among the most famous are the Korsun-Bogoroditsky cathedral, built in the style of the provincial baroque by the project of Smolensk architect Osip Spirkin, and also some churches - Bogoyavlenskaya, Nikolskaya, Pokrovskaya, John the Baptist.? In the central squares and streets there are stone merchant houses that still bear the names of the owners: the house of Beznosov, the house of Sharapov. Many houses are built in the so-called style of the Toropets baroque.? Toropets inspired the creation of operas and romances of the composer himself. Mussorgsky (1839-1881 gg.), Often visited these places in the years 1861-1863.
This quiet city with window-eyes? Looks in a saucer-lake of blue water. The streets are old, traversed by us, like the paths of life, the lines of destiny. Church domes amidst bright greenery, old patchwork motley strokes. An ancient settlement, as a ship of time? On the waves-centuries of the life river. "Somewhere here the childhood is lost barefoot," Somewhere the youth has lost its way ...? You are my refuge, the city on the spurs? Of ancient Valdai - the Russian land. Lyudmila Nefedova
