Oscar Wilde
The poet's full name sounds like Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Willis Wilde. He was born in Dublin on October 16, 1854, in a well-known family in high society. Father is Sir William Wilde, a leading OTO-ophthalmologist. He was knighted in 1864. Mother – Jane Francesca Wilde was an active fighter for the rights of the indigenous Irish, actively supported the revolutionary movement. My parents had a common hobby – literature. Moreover, my father specialized in historical and archaeological research, and my mother wrote poetry. Evenings were often held in their house, which were attended by prominent representatives of medicine and culture of Ireland.
There were three children in the family — the eldest son William, the middle Oscar and the youngest daughter Isola. The girl died at the age of 10, the cause of death was inflammation of the brain. All the children studied at home. To do this, they hired two governesses – a German and a French woman. Then the brothers entered the Royal School of Portora, located in the suburbs of Dublin. Oscar loved to read from an early age, and amazed others with his wit. He graduated from this school at the age of 17 with a gold medal, and received a referral to Trinity College to continue his studies.
At the University of Oxford, his attitude to the world of beauty was also formed. He does not focus exclusively on moral values, which he previously perceived as the only criterion of beauty. The worldview of the future poet was formed under the influence of the teacher John Ruskin, a writer and theorist from the UK. It was thanks to him that literary trends were formed at the end of the 19th century. As a student, Wilde first went on a trip to Greece and Italy. He adored these countries, got a lot of pleasure from the trip and a portion of new impressions, which resulted in his first poem called "Ravenna". For this work he was awarded the university Prize. Thus began the creative biography of the famous poet and playwright.
At the age of 24, Oscar moved to London. Now he constantly visits all the secular salons of the English capital, surprises other guests with his ironic and contradictory statements, demeanor and style of clothing. The intelligentsia and aristocracy adopted his tastes and habits. The number of young people who inherited their idol in everything gradually increased. His sharp statements and jokes immediately became quotes and went to the masses. He returned to London at the age of 29, got a family, and began writing fairy tales, mostly to please his own sons.
At the age of thirty-three, Wilde began writing serious works. Immediately he published the stories "The Canterville Ghost", "The Crime of Lord Arthur Sevil", "The Sphinx without a Riddle". Then he began work on the work of his whole life – the novel "Portrait of Dorian Gray". The novel went on sale in 1890, and made an ambiguous impression on contemporaries. The author wrote it exclusively for educational purposes, but high society considered it immoral. But ordinary readers liked the novel. After the scandal caused by the publication of the novel, Wilde presents to the readers a drama called "Salome". She played a big role in the development of the art of decadence. And this play was met with ambiguity, so it was not staged in England for a long time.
Oscar has never known a lack of female attention, and he himself was very amorous. Even as a young man, he had a passion for Florrie Balcum, and then for the actress Lily Langtry. At the same time, he became a regular customer in London brothels, which were chosen by the creative elite of the capital. But the personal life of the metropolitan lovelace changed after Constance Lloyd, the daughter of a famous lawyer, appeared in it. The romantic relationship of the young people lasted for three years, and in 1884 grew into a family union. In June 1885, the couple had a son Cyril, and in November 1886, another son Vivian. After a while, the couple began to move away from each other. Perhaps Oscar wanted to protect his wife from contracting a venereal disease, which he did not cure at the time, or maybe he already felt an interest in men at that time. The poet lives separately from his family, and begins to get involved with men. Oscar's first partner was Robert Ross, Wilde's personal secretary and confidant.
In 1897, Wilde was released from prison and urgently left the country. Settled in Paris, he has absolutely no money. The only income was the money that his wife sent him as a monthly allowance. She had sold off all of their family's personal possessions and had the means. In Paris, meetings with Douglas resumed, but there was no longer the same intimacy in the relationship. Under the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth, Oscar begins his literary activity again, and publishes The Ballad of Reading PrisonAt the beginning of 1900, the writer picked up an ear infection. The writer's immunity was weakened by hard labor, so he developed meningitis. The writer died on November 30, 1900, having never recovered from brain inflammation. He was buried at the Bagnot Cemetery, and ten years later he was reburied at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
In one of the plays, Wilde wrote "One kiss can destroy a whole life." Now the monument on his grave is collapsing from the kisses of the fans. In 2011, on the occasion of the 111th anniversary of the death of the great writer and poet, the Paris authorities decided to build a glass barrier around the monument. From now on, girls leave traces on the glass, throwing notes and flowers inside the case.
