The birth of Hollywood
Almost a hundred years ago, at the beginning of 1908, the first American film producers were pulled out of the New York to the in California. So there was a Hollywood - a great "factory of dreams" and the capital of illusions.
In 1886, some Deyda Uilkons from Kansas City with her husband bought a piece of land in the neighborhood of Los Angeles, calling it Hollywood The first filmmaker who set foot on the land of Hollywood, was William Selig, who has bought a piece of land to place on it a branch of his Chicago-based film company.
Silent movie
The first short films were mostly documentaries, however, already in a comedic dramatization. Small length of the first movies was due to technical imperfections of film equipment, however, in the beginning 1900’s length of the films increased to 200-300 meters (15-20 minutes of demonstration). During this period, with the increasing complexity and extension of the plot begins to form more genres of cinema, enlarges their artistic originality, creates for each specific genre set of graphic techniques.
First appearance of sound in movies
- Until 1927 almost all the films were «silent», they contained only a picture, no sound. At the beginning of 1920 appears the first system capable of recording and playback of sound in film. The first movie was released by American company "Warner Brothers", in 1927 she released the first film in which a character on the screen was talking - "The Jazz Singer".
- The arrival of sound in cinema reduces the role of the techniques of artistic expression .
Charles Spencer Chaplin
Biography
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born in London, England, on April 16th, 1889. His father was a versatile vocalist and actor; and his mother, Lily Harley, was an attractive actress and singer, who gained a reputation for her work in the light opera.
Having inherited natural talents from their parents, Chaplin took to the stage as the best opportunity for a career. Charlie made his professional debut as a member of a juvenile group called “The Eight Lancashire Lads” and rapidly won popular favour as an outstanding tap dancer.
Beginning of his career
When he was about twelve, he got his first chance to act in a stage show, and appeared as “Billy” the page boy, in support of William Gillette in “Sherlock Holmes”. At the close of this engagement, Charlie started a career as a comedian in vaudeville, which eventually took him to the United States in 1910 as a featured player with the Fred Karno Repertoire Company.
He scored an immediate hit with American audiences, particularly with his characterization in a sketch entitled “A Night in an English Music Hall”.
He agreed to appear before the cameras at the expiration of his vaudeville commitments in November 1913; his entrance in the cinema world took place that month when he joined Mack Sennett and the Keystone Film Company. His initial salary was $150 a week, but his overnight success on the screen spurred other producers to start negotiations for his services.
The Kid (1921)
However, before he could assume his responsibilities with United Artists, Chaplin had to complete his contract with First National. So early in 1921, he came out with a six-reel masterpiece: The Kid , in which he introduced to the screen one of the greatest child actors the world has ever known - Jackie Coogan.
Monsieur Verdoux (1947)
Charles Chaplin, without modesty, described Monsieur Verdoux as “the cleverest and most brilliant film of my career”.
Verdoux was certainly the blackest of his comedies - the story of a serial killer who ends up beheaded on the guillotine. As he had always said, comedy is never very far from tragedy and horror. “Under the proper circumstances - murder can be comic”.
Last years
Chaplin’s versatility extended to writing, music and sports. He was the author of four books, “My Trip Abroad”, “A Comedian Sees the World”, “My Autobiography”, “My Life in Pictures”.
He was a composer, having written many songs, among them: “Sing a Song”, “Smile”, “Eternally”,l.
He died on Christmas day 1977, survived by eight children from his last marriage with Oona O’Neill, and one son from his short marriage to Lita Grey.
I think that the movie became an essential part of art nowadays. Movie shows us real interpretation of people’s relationship and that’s the thing that attracts people watching films. With appearance of newer technologies of film making, movies become more difficult and more interesting to watch them.
