“ The upside down world”
Australia is a fascinating country. It is full of strange and wonderful places, unusual animals and amazing culture. Australia is called “the upside down world”, because it lies in the Southern Hemisphere where winter comes in July and summer begins in December.
The Coat of Arms features two animals –
The Kangaroo and the Emu.
It is claimed that these animals are featured because they are both native to Australia and both find it difficult to go backwards - they can only ever advance, going forward. The shield itself is to represent the 6 states of Australia.
Australia has the area about 8 million square km.
Its population is more than 28 million people.
Australia is a multicultural society with about a quarter of the population foreign born. Settlers from about 200 countries have made Australia their home. Aborigines now comprise only 1.5 per cent of the population.
Australia is a very urban country. About 70 per cent of the population live in the 10 largest cities.
Most of the population is in the south-eastern corner of the country and only 15 per cent of the population live in rural areas.
Canberra is the capital of Australia.
It is not the biggest city.
Sydney and Melbourne are much larger.

The centerpiece of the city is the new Parliament House, which was opened in 1988.
Australia’s national landmarks are located in Canberra.
There are many fine museums in Canberra. The National Gallery, the National Science and Technology Centre, the High Court and the Old Parliament House are all here.
Sydney
is the largest and oldest city in Australia.
Capital of New South Wales.
Tourists from all over the world are attracted by Sydney’s natural beauty, Mediterranean climate, and its impressive galleries, museums, architecture and parks.
Melbourne
is the acknowledged Culture Capital of Australia, with world-class music, dance, opera, comedy and theatre.
Capital of Victoria. Second largest city in Australia. Population about 5,160,000.
