Scotland takes up one third of the territory of the British Isles. It is situated in the north of the island of Great Britain.
Scotland is divided into 2 parts: the Highlands and the Lowlands.
The Highlands of Scotland are among the oldest mountains in the world. It is the area of hills, beautiful lakes and deer forests.
Mountain lakes are called “lochs”. The beautiful Loch Lomond is the largest, but Loch Ness is more famous and known much better. This is because of Nessie, a strange animal-monster that lives here, people say.
The capital of Scotland is Edinburg. It is known for its old buildings, fortress-like castles and the famous university.
The world famous Edinburg Festival of Music and Drama is held here in August every year.
“ My Heart’s in the Highlands”. This poem is known to all Scottish people. It was written by Robert Burns, Scottish national poet. Every year, on the 25 th of January, his birthday is celebrated in cities, towns and villages.
Many people of Scotland have name MacDonald or MacKenzie. “Mac” means “son of” and people with this name usually feel they belong to the same family or clan.
Scotland is well-known to the word because of its traditional costume – the kilt, type of thick skirt, worn by Scottish men.
A traditional custom in Scotland is the Highland Games. At these games athlets from all over the world take part in track-and-field events.
Music is provided by the bagpipe, the Scottish national instrument.
The country’s national emblem is the thistle. It is a wild plant with prickly leaves and large purple flowers.
The national drink of Scotland is whiskey.
Almost every sport, which exists, is played in Scotland, but golf is considered to be the most popular. It is Scotland’s main contribution to British sport.
