Arthur Conan Doyle is a famous English writer who has worked in the adventure, humorous and science fiction genres. An ardent fan of spiritualism, the author of more than seventy books.

Childhood

The writer's full name is Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle. He was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859. The childhood of the future creator of the image of a brilliant detective was spent in a city that boasts the Cathedral of St. Aegidius and the Royal Botanical Garden, whose lilac heather and palm greenhouse attracted numerous tourists.Arthur's family was very respected, deeply Catholic. The boy's parents contributed to the development of literature and art. Grandfather John Doyle is an Irish artist, famous for his miniatures and political caricature. His ancestors traded in velvet and silk.Arthur's father, Charles Altamont Doyle, continued the work of John Doyle, he depicted the Victorian era with its Gothic subjects in the form of fairy–tale characters, fairies, witches and animals on his canvases. Charles remained in history as an excellent illustrator who collaborated with Daniel Defoe and Lewis Carroll.

Although the boy was not very fond of the knightly books authored by Walter Scott, he liked Thomas Mayne Reed and his adventure novels more. Charles earned very little. He always wanted to become famous as an artist, dreamed of seeing himself among the famous masters of the brush – Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, but recognition and fame bypassed him. His canvases were almost not sold, gradually accumulated in the workshop, covered with dust. Sometimes it was possible to sell small illustrations, but it was negligible compared to the needs of a large family.

Arthur was sent to study at the Goddard Elementary School. At the age of nine, the boy was sent to the closed Jesuit college Stonyhurst, where his famous relatives paid for his education. Arthur didn't like school. Most of all, he was annoyed by religious prejudices and class inequality, could not put up with physical punishments – a teacher with a belt in his hands did not contribute to the creative development of a person.The boy was absolutely not friends with mathematics, frankly pined while solving complex examples or working with algebraic formulas. For this, he was constantly beaten by fellow students – the Moriarty brothers. Conan Doyle found satisfaction in sports, playing cricket distracted from the longing inspired by the exact sciences. Arthur wrote to his mother very often and told her in detail about everything that happened to him at school. At the same time, he discovered the gift of a storyteller, invented various adventure stories that he told to his peers.

Studying

When it came time to choose a life path, Arthur settled on medicine, and this did not surprise anyone. There are a lot of such examples in history, the most striking one can be called Chekhov, who considered medicine a legitimate wife, and literature a mistress.

Doyle was awarded his bachelor's degree in 1881, and immediately began practicing medicine. It would take a long ten years before the writer would sort himself out, leave the ophthalmology room and completely switch to literary activity. In 1884, the writer began composing his novel "Girdlestone Trading House", which was published in 1890. The work touches on the criminal and domestic problems of England of those years, shows how clever businessmen skillfully deceive people who easily fall into their networks.

Literature

In March 1886, Arthur began to write "A Study in crimson tones", and completed work on it in just a month, in April. With this work begins the glorious story of Sherlock Holmes, the famous London detective, who brought the author incredible popularity. The character was written from a real person – Joseph Bell, a surgeon by profession, professor at the University of Edinburgh. The logic of this man was so developed that he could use it to find not only gross mistakes, but also an accidental oversight.Arthur simply idolized Joseph, he closely followed his every move, admired the deductive method he created. As it turned out, with the help of ashes, cigarette butts, watches, dirt under the nails and a dog-bitten cane, you can learn a lot more about a person than from his biography.Doyle endowed Sherlock Holmes with the qualities of a real person, he did not even try to make him a mystical book hero, ideal in all respects. His Sherlock is the same as everyone else, with human weaknesses and bad habits – carelessness, smoking strong cigarettes (the tube was invented by illustrators), and intravenous cocaine use when there was no interesting case.

The famous series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" began with the story "Scandal in Bohemia". In total, this cycle consists of twelve detective stories about the famous Holmes and his permanent assistant Watson. Arthur Conan Doyle became the author of four novels – "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "A Study in Crimson tones", "The Sign of Four", "The Valley of Horror". Popular works brought the author not only worldwide fame, but also a decent income, he turned into the highest-paid writer not only in his homeland, but also in the world.

Rumor has it that Doyle was pretty tired of his star character, and in 1893 he decided to kill Sherlock Holmes. However, after the publication of this work, the author began to receive threats and unambiguous warnings. He was told that he himself could pay with his life if the witty detective did not resurrect in the near future. Arthur did not ignore the provocative words, in 1902 he resurrected Holmes and after that wrote many more stories about the heroes beloved by readers.In 1912, Doyle wrote an incredibly exciting fantasy novel called "The Lost World", which was later filmed many times. He wrote fantastic novels and novellas, in 1926 two volumes of The History of Spiritualism were published, which the writer published at his own expense. In addition to prose, Doyle also wrote poetry, and published three collections of his poetry

The writer led an active lifestyle until his old age, he worked actively, managed to travel, traveled almost all continents of the world. And when he decided to visit Scandinavia, health problems began. He felt seriously unwell and spent the whole spring in bed, being under the constant supervision of his family and close people.Monuments to Arthur Conan Doyle after recovering, the writer took a trip to London, he really hoped that the British Home Secretary would give him time. Doyle wanted to demand that the official repeal the laws allowing the government to persecute adherents of spiritualism.The restless writer's heart stopped on July 7, 1930. The place of death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was his own house in Sussex. The cause of death is a heart attack. Doyle was immediately buried next to his house, then it was decided to reburial his remains in the New Forest.
