The flag of the United Kingdom

The British flag, like the flag of any country, is an instantly recognizable symbol of a nation. All flags tell a story, and the Union Jack tells us about the history of the United Kingdom (the UK). The flag has quite an unusual design. In fact, it is a combination of three flags – the flags of England, Scotland and Ireland.

1. St George's Cross (England)

In 1194 A.D., Richard I of England introduced the Cross of St. George, a red cross on a white ground, as the national flag of England until James I succeeded to the throne in 1603.

2. St Andrew's Cross (Scotland)

St Andrew, brother of the Holy Peter, converted Asian people to Christianity. He was executed on an askew cross. His body was brought to Scotland. In the 11th century St Andrew was claimed to be the only patron saint of Scotland. Since the 14th century Scottish troops have been carrying a white cross on a dark ground. In the 17th century the dark ground became blue.

3. St Patrick's Cross (Ireland)

St Patrick, the Irish patron saint lived from about 385-461. His original name was Marwyn. He grew up in Wales. Later he was taken away to Ireland. 6 years later he flew to France and lived in a monastery for 12 years. He became a priest there and took over the name ›Patrick‹. He went to Ireland as a bishop. St. Patrick built monasteries, churches and schools there. He became very popular. The origin of the flag goes back to 17th March (St. Patrick's Day). Since the 17th century people wear a cross made of paper on this day.

When the ”Union Jack” was first introduced in 1606, it was known simply as “the British flag” or ‘the flag of Britain”, and was ordered to be flown at the main masthead of all ships, warships and merchant ships, of both England and Scotland. The flag of the United Kingdom was adopted on January 1, 1801 .

Содру́жество  ( англ.   Commonwealth ), или  Содру́жество На́ций  

( англ.   Commonwealth of Nations ; до  1946   Британское

Содружество наций  —  англ.   British Commonwealth of Nations ) — добровольное межгосударственное объединение суверенных государств, в которое входят  Великобритания  и почти все её бывшие  доминионы ,  колонии  и  протектораты . Кроме того, членами содружества являются Мозамбик ,  Руанда ,  Намибия  и  Камерун .

Доминио́н  ( англ.   dominion , от  лат.   dominium  — владение) — фактически независимое  государство  в составе  Британской империи  (ныне — в составе  Британского Содружества ), признающее  главой государства   британского монарха , представленного в доминионе  генерал-губернатором .

The Commonwealth Realm

Королевства Содружества  ( англ.   Commonwealth realms) — титул в 16 государствах  Содружества , считающих  королеву Елизавету II  своим  монархом , в каждом из них она выступает как  глава государства  и носит соответствующий титул. Например, в  Барбадосе  она именуется «Её Величество королева Елизавета II, королева Барбадоса». Внутри Содружества нет разницы в статусе между королевствами и прочими членами, большинство из которых является либо республиками либо королевствами со своими собственными монархами

  Папуа — Новая Гвинея , с получения независимости в  1975 году

  Сент-Винсент и Гренадины , с получения независимости в  1979 году

  Сент-Китс и Невис , с получения независимости в  1983 году

  Сент-Люсия , с получения независимости в 1979 году

  Соломоновы Острова , с получения независимости в  1978 году

  Тувалу , с получения независимости в 1978 году

  Ямайка , с получения независимости в  1962 году .
