London
- is the capital of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- It is the largest city in Europe and one of the largest cities in the world .
London is a great tourist centre. There are a lot of places of interest in London which attract thousands of tourists every year. The most popular sights are the Tower of London and the Houses of Parliament .
The Tower of London
In the centre of the city there is the Tower of London, which was built in 1066. Once it was a royal palace , then a prison for criminals . Today it is one of the most famous museums of London.
Black ravens live in the Tower. Here you can see one of them. A legend says that as long as the ravens live here, England is safe from invasion.
One of the most famous attractions of the Tower are 36 beefeaters.
Beefeaters guard the Tower of London and look after the ravens.
The Houses of Parliament were built in 1834.
There are two houses in the Parliament: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Here you can see the famous clock Big Ben .
Trafalgar Square
Trafalgar Square is the favourite place of Londoners and tourists.
Tower Bridge
There are about 20 bridges across the river Thames. The most popular one is Tower Bridge. It has become the symbol of England.

Westminster Abbey
It’s a royal church.
Almost all kings and queens of Britain are buried here.

St. Paul’s Cathedral
This cathedral was built by famous British architect Sir Christopher Wren. A lot of famous people are buried here.
There a lot of beautiful parks and gardens in London where people can have a rest.
St. James’s Park
In London Zoo you can see thousands of exotic animals.
The London Eye looks like a giant bicycle wheel.
Its diameter is 135 meters.
The Eye is especially popular with children .
