Past perfect simple обычно употребляется с:

• by I’d finished my homework by light o’clock.
• by the time By the time I got to class, the lesson had started.
• before The teacher had checked the answers before the lesson.
• after I left after I’d finished the test.
• just Simon had just finished the hest when the bell rand.
• when I left when I’d finished the test

• Употребление past simple или past perfect simple может изменить смысл предложения.

The lesson started when I arrived (я пришел, а затем начался урок)

They lesson had started when I arrived (урок начался, а потом я пришел)

Past perfect continuous

Примеры:

We’d been doing grammar exercises for over an hour, so we were really bored.

They had a break because they’d been working so hard.

Употребляется

для описания:

Действий, которые начались до

определенного момента в прошлом

и продолжаются в этот момент, либо завершились к этому моменту.

Past perfect continuous обычно употребляется с:

• for Tony had been studying for hours, so he had a headache.
• since She’d been hoping to win the competition since the summer.
• before We’d been talking about the internet before the lesson started .
• all daylight lets I’d been studying all day

Past perfect simple обычно подчеркивает результат действия.

She’d written the article before she phoned the editor (Она закончила статью)

Past perfect continuous подчеркивает длительность действия, а не его результат.

She’d been writing the article for an hour before she phoned the editor (Она начала писать статью, но еще не закончила её)
