Lake Baikal

"Baikal is amazing, and it is not without reason that Siberians refer to it not as a lake, but as a sea. Its water is unusually transparent, so that one can look though it as through air; its colour is a soft-turquoise, pleasant to the eye. Its shores are mountainous and forest-covered; impenetrable wilderness all around. A profusion of bears, sable, wild goat and all sorts of wild thing," was how Anton Chekhov spoke of Lake Baikal.

“ National parks”

America was the first country in starting up “National Parks”, beginning with Yellowstone in 1872.

Now there are ten national parks in England and Wales which cover 9% of the land area. 90 million visitors come to national parks every year.

The first aim of national parks is to protect the countryside; the second aim is to allow people to enjoy the countryside as home to trees, flowers, animals and birds.

Famous people about ecology

There is a special section on the website of the Russian Prime Minister devoted to the protection of Ussuri tigers. There is also a map there which indicates the movement of Putin’s tiger.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin came to the Ussuri Reserve by helicopter on August 31, 2008, to see tiger studies.

Ecological organizations and signs

There are different types of environmental organizations. Four of them are:

• Government Organizations
• Intergovernmental Organizations
• Private Organizations
• International Organizations

How can we help our earth?

1. Ask your government to make laws to protect air, water and soil.

2. Develop international cooperation to solve ecological problems together.

3. Save water, gas, energy and other natural resources.

4. Keep your towns, cities and countryside clean.

5. Don’t waste water, gas, energy, natural resources.

6. Don’t poison the water, air and soil.

7 . Don’t dump or pour industrial waste into rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.

8. Don’t turn the planet into a rubbish dump.

9. Don’t cut down trees.

10. Walk or use a bicycle instead of going by car.

11. Plant more trees.

12. Protect animals and wildlife.
