Annotation

The presented project "Choosing a mobile application for learning English" is very relevant, since knowledge of a foreign language is necessary in modern world. Mobile applications are one of the most effective methods of studying it.

From this project you will learn about the most popular mobile applications for learning English. Also, the functions of these applications will be analyzed in the work, their advantages and disadvantages will be identified, a review and analysis will be carried out.

As a result, one application will be selected, which is the best according to the author of the project.

My research project can be useful for those guys who can't decide which mobile app is better to use for learning a language.

Introduction

The topic of this study: "The choice of a mobile application for learning English."

The relevance of the chosen topic is related to the search for effective ways to learn English.

Mobile applications are one of the most convenient language learning assistants. The developers use the latest techniques that allow you to successfully memorize words, understand grammar and progress noticeably in English.

Problem: "In a large number of mobile applications for learning English, it is difficult for a beginner to choose the right one."

The purpose of the study: to identify the most popular applications and choose the best one from them.

Tasks:

1) Select the TOP-10 mobile applications for learning English on Android and IOS platforms.

2) Analyze the number of reviews from users of these applications.

3) Consider the features of these applications.

4) Choose the optimal mobile application

Methods were used in the work:

1. search for information, selection of applications for learning English;

2. analysis of user reviews of applications to identify the best mobile applications;

3. independent use of some applications and analysis of their capabilities.

The theoretical and practical significance of the study lies in the fact that smartphones have tightly entered our lives, learning a foreign language has become more convenient thanks to applications and a large selection of these applications leads to the search for the best.

1. Role and opportunities of mobile applications

Today it is difficult to imagine our life without phones. Everyone uses them: from kids, who sometimes understand technology more than adults, and ending with pensioners who have mastered modern devices. And, of course, we all use a huge variety of mobile applications. Various games, navigators, photo and video editors - we can download almost everything you need to our mobile phone. So why don't we benefit from this by downloading really necessary, interesting and knowledge-generating applications?

Many people download apps on their phones to learn English.

Applications can be used as a stand-alone tool for vocabulary replenishment and grammar revision, and as an additional element that will help make your learning in English courses or with a tutor even more effective.

Modern mobile applications offer us great information opportunities. We ourselves can regulate the level, set certain goals and even choose topics that we like.

Learning English through mobile applications has a number of advantages. Firstly, with them we can learn the language at any convenient time. Secondly, it is necessary to note the quick access to the studied information. In addition, classes in applications are always interesting, colorful, and often take place in a playful way.

1. Choosing a mobile app for learning English

2.1 Find the most popular apps

I made an overview of the most popular apps for learning English by the number of user reviews of App platforms Store and Google play. Since there are a lot of applications, I have highlighted the TOP -10 applications in the App Store and Google Play and analyzed each application. To do this, I noted the main functions of applications, namely:

- the presence of initial testing to determine the current level of the student;

- the presence of exercises to consolidate knowledge;

-auditing;

- study of grammar;

-the presence of a dictionary;

- age recommendations;

- application fee.

To research applications, I needed to install many of them and test them in practice. Based on the results of this study, tables 1 and 2 were compiled:

Analyzing the data in the table, we can conclude that not all applications have a complete set of functions that are important for learning the language. All apps have exercises. Most applications are paid. After conducting a comparative analysis, for a further more detailed review, I chose the 3 best, in my opinion, applications.

2.2. Overview of applications with the maximum set of functions

2.2.1 Duolingo

Duolingo is the world 's most popular language learning app. This is a free application where learning is carried out in a playful way.

The application has several types of language development: translation, listening, oral exercises. When listening , you need to write what is said in the voice of the application.

Pros:

• Access to absolutely all training, materials and tasks is free.

• Listening. The audio recording can be listened to both at a normal pace and in slow motion, which is invaluable for beginners or for those who find it difficult to perceive speech by ear.

• Pronunciation. Repeat the phrases that you hear, and the application will analyze whether you are doing everything right.

• Educational materials. Each lesson is accompanied by a theory.

• Constant repetition of vocabulary in different lessons. Words will be repeated throughout different levels, which increases the chance of memorizing them.

Cons:

• The lessons are not systematized, difficult to understand.

• Suitable for basic training only.

2.2.2 EWA

Ewa is a personalized English tutor. Each user chooses the appropriate level and pace of learning. EWA is courses, books and audio for the development of oral and written English skills. EWA IS SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE who wants to speak, read, write and understand English, as well as those who want to prepare for exams.

Each lesson is a set of thematic clippings of phrases from films / cartoons / series / books. After studying - mandatory testing exercises: choose the correct translation, match the English word with the Russian, make a word from the letters.

Pros:

• the ability to select the desired topic: business, colloquial speech, art, IT and much more;

• in each topic, it is proposed to learn a set expression through pieces of series and films;

• there is an opportunity to watch clippings from films and series, which are immediately accompanied by a translation;

• memorization of words occurs through listening, reading, writing

• All materials are divided according to the degree of complexity and level of knowledge of the language.

Cons:

• short free period.

2 .2.3.Lingualeo

Lingualeo is a convenient and efficient service for learning foreign languages. This is a linguistic super app that includes many teaching tools and methodologies.

The application has the following sections:

1. Materials. Here is a variety of content in English. You can take material from here and study it. Unfamiliar words can be added to your dictionary.

2. Courses. Here various aspects of the language are studied through video, audio and other materials.

3. Workouts. There are several types of exercises for memorizing words.

4. Grammar. Trainer and grammar guide. Here you can view the rules and compose phrases and sentences from words.

5. Words and phrases. Allows you to view options for phrases and words in the target language on a particular topic.

6. Dictionary. Here are your words and their translation.

7. Savannah. Reminds a social network where users can communicate and unite in " prides ".

8. Communication. The news of the service is published here, as well as the news feed of your friends, user dialogs, etc.

9. Video with subtitles. When watching a video, you can use the cursor in the subtitles to specify a word to add to the dictionary.

Pros:

• Variability in learning new words.

• Various workouts.

• Grammar courses on various topics, both for beginner and advanced levels.

Cons:

• LinguaLeo designed for long and rather slow learning.

• Communication with native English speakers is not provided.

1. The results of the study

After analyzing the selected applications, I came to the conclusion that the most optimal mobile application for learning English is the Duolingo application. A distinctive feature of this application is accessibility - its use is completely free. Of all the main functions, only the dictionary is missing.

The application has the widest audience, which is confirmed by the data in tables 1 and 2. Duolingo has been downloaded by more than 100,000 users on the Android platform, and received about 12,000 reviews, which is many times more than similar applications.

Conclusion

In the course of this work, mobile applications for learning English on the Android and IOS platforms were studied. I tried to solve the problem that anyone who wants to learn English using mobile devices may face, namely: choosing an application with the optimal set of functions.

Based on my research, we can conclude that, despite the large selection of applications, there are very few truly useful and convenient ones.

The application I have chosen has the maximum set of basic functions necessary for learning the language and is free.

It should be noted that the maximum set of functions of the mobile application for learning English allows you to achieve good results.
