Shillelaghs are traditionally made from  blackthorn  (sloe) wood ( Prunus spinosa ) or oak. Wood from the root was prized as it was less prone to cracking during use. The wood would be smeared with butter or lard, and placed up a chimney to cure, giving the shillelagh its typical black shiny appearance.

Мэвин Суккат (Maewyn Succat). Отец Мэвина (Патрика)был мелким землевладельцем и дьяконом местной церкви, однако занимал эту должность в основном из-за денег, так что юный Патрик не был особенно глубоко верующим. Примерно в 16 лет он был захвачен в плен пиратами и привезен в Ирландию, где попал в услужение к вождю по имени Милчу. Юноша был вынужден стать пастухом и дни напролет проводил со стадом овец. Вот тогда он и поверил в Бога, начав молиться. Спустя шесть лет, как повествует легенда, он услышал голос, который, как он полагал, принадлежал Богу: "Скоро ты вернешься домой". А потом голос добавил: "Смотри, твой корабль ждет".  Молодой пастух бежал и добрался до побережья. Попав домой, Патрик, несмотря на радость семьи, вновь обретшей сына, твердо решил стать на духовный путь.

С именем Святого Патрика связано множество легенд, например, что он с помощью трехлистного клевера (shamrock) объяснял людям понятие Святой Троицы. «Так же как три листа могут расти от одного стебля, так и Бог может быть един в трех лицах».

Однажды во время Великого поста Святой Патрик постился в течении сорока дней и ночей на вершине горы Кроу Патрик. Бог испугался, что он может умереть и оставить незаконченным свое жизненное предназначение, поэтому попросил Патрика прекратить пост, но тот согласился на это только при трех условиях: ирландцы не должны жить постоянно под гнетом, страна будет затоплена за семь лет до конца света, чтобы избежать разрушения, и чтобы самому Патрику было разрешено судить всех в последний день. После этого эту гору стали называть Croagh Patrick.
