THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON

The summer of 1666 was very hot and there was not any rain. One night in September a strong wind started to blow. The fire started in a baker’s shop, where a baker made bread on a fire in a big oven. Soon the fire was very big. In those days the streets of London were very narrow. The houses were wooden and, because of the hot weather, they were very dry. The fire went quickly from house to house and from street to street. Many people ran away from the city. But some of them stayed in London. They took water from the river to fight the fire. The fire burned for three days and three nights. Many houses and buildings burned down. After the fire many people lived in tents in the fields near London. It was a terrible fire. How many people died, do you think? A hundred? A thousand? No. The answer is: six

1. The Great Fire of London was in summer.

2. The fire started in a bakery

QUEEN ELIZABETH I OF ENGLAND

Queen Elizabeth I of England was born in Greenwich on September 7, 1533. She became the queen when she was 25. Elizabeth studied well and learned to speak Latin, French, Italian, Greek and English, of course! She was intelligent, energetic and brave. She was the first British monarch with an English mother and an English father. But she never married and never had children. Many men wanted to marry her, but she said no to all of them. Elizabeth was the Queen for 44 years. This period is called the Golden Age because England became a rich and powerful country for the first time. It was a Golden Age for literature, discoveries and heroes too. Elizabeth was the queen of William Shakespeare, the great writer, of Sir Walter Raleigh, who travelled to America and imported potatoes and coffee, and of Francis Drake, the pirate who destroyed the “Spanish Armada”.

THE WHITE HOUSE

The White House is the place where American President lives and works. The White house was built in 1800. It has six floors. There are 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, and five kitchens, all on six floors. There are pictures of old presidents on the walls. The President and his family live on the second and third floors. If the President has guests they stay in special rooms. The office where the President works is called the Oval Office. Each new president chooses new curtains, new furniture, and a new carpet for his office. 10 About 200 people look after the building day and night. Outside, gardeners grow fruit and vegetables. There is also a tennis court, a gym, and a swimming pool. Inside there is a cinema, a billiard room and a library. As former President Reagan said, The White House is like an eight­star hotel! The White House is open to visitors. It is free. About 6,000 people a day visit it.

REBECCA STEVENS

Rebecca Stevens was the first woman to get to the top of Mount Everest. Before that she was a journalist and lived in a small flat in south London. In 1993, Rebecca left her job and travelled to Asia with some friends. She says that life on Everest is hard “You must carry everything in your bag, so you can take only what you need You can’t wash on the mountain, because there is no water, only snow.” It was the best moment in her life when Rebecca was on the top of Mount Everest in May, 1993. Suddenly she became famous. She wrote a book about the trip and people often ask her to talk about it. Now she works on television. Rebecca is well known today and she has more money, but she still lives in the little flat in London. In her flat she has many pictures and books about mountains!
