British customs and traditions.

Every nation and every country has its own traditions and customs. But when we speak about British traditions we always remember that there are four parts in Britain – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Traditions are different in these parts of the country.

October 31st is Halloween. And there are always a lot of parties on October 31st. At these parties people wear masks and they dress as ghosts and witches. Some people make special Halloween lamps from a large pumpkin. First they cut the middle of the pumpkin, then they cut holes for the eyes, nose and mouth, and finally they put a candle inside the pumpkin.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes’ Day in Britain. All over the country people build fires with a figure of Guy Fawkes in their gardens. But before November 5th , children use these figures to make money. They stand on the streets and squares and shout: “Penny for the guy!” Then they spend the money on fireworks.

There are a lot of Christmas and New Year traditions in Great Britain. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It is a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. In Britain the most important meal on December 25th is Christmas dinner: a roast turkey with potatoes, carrots and other vegetable, and then, after the turkey, there is Christmas pudding.

In Britain a lot of people make New Year Resolutions on the evening of December 31st. For example, “I’ll get up early every morning next year” or “I’ll clean my shoes every day”. But there is a problem. Most people forget their New Year Resolutions on January 2nd.
