Christmas  In Russia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7th, as the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar.   Families gather together, have holiday dinners, exchange gifts and attend church services to mark the occasion.   Homes are decorated with lights, ornaments and the Russian Christmas tree.   Merry Russian Christmas carols or kolyadki are sung celebrating the birth of Christ.

On this day believers remember the christening (крещение) of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.   One of the main traditions of Epiphany is bathing in an ice hole (прорубь), which symbolizes purification (очищение) from sins (грехов). It is believed that water on this day has special properties (свойства) and can heal (исцелить) the soul and body.
