Ход урока

  1. The teacher reads the cinquain written on the blackboard:

Shopping

exciting, tiring,

to look for, to try on, to buy,

shopping is fun

wasting money.

What do you think the theme of our lesson is? Yes, you’re right, it’s shopping.

  1. Warming up.

1) Where can you buy these things? (pictures: at greengrocer’s, at fishmonger’s, at bookshop, at stationer’s, at newsagent’s, at DIY store, at furniture shop, at flower shop).

2) Name the types of shops and their definitions.

  1. Watching a DVD-film.

You are going to hear a conversation between a shop-assistant and two customers.

  1. Discussing. Shop till you drop.

Whether it’s buying something to cook for dinner, choosing some new clothes or picking up a gift for a friend’s birthday, we all have to shop. Nowadays most people are so busy that they don’t want to spend a lot of time shopping. Fortunately, there is a variety of shopping options, something to meet everyone’s needs.

  1. For some people shopping is a pleasant experience, a chance to meet a friend and spend the day from shop to shop in one of the modern shopping centres. They enjoy looking for bargains, especially in shops that sell brand names. They don’t mind trying on lots of different clothes – it all adds to the enjoyment of the day. After a hard day’s shopping they often see a film at one of the cinemas at the shopping centre or have dinner at one of the many restaurants there. As for me, I don’t like shopping,

  1. But I like shopping. (She tells about her favourite places of shopping in Sergiev Posad).

K. Other people prefer shopping quickly and easily from their own home by shopping online. All they have to do is search the Internet for the item they want to buy, read about it and place an order for it, using a credit card. It’s fast, easy and convenient. Of course, you have to wait for the item to be delivered to your home, which can take from two days to two weeks and if you don’t like the item when you get it, you’ll have to pack it up and return it to the company. There’s no time wasted travelling to and from shopping centre, no searching for the item you want and no trying on. (Then he says a few words about his own experience of buying things through the Internet).

V. Many shops also accept orders placed by phone. You can call your local supermarket for example, and give them a list of the items you want to buy. One of their staff will gather all the items you want, charge them to your credit card and deliver them to your home. Of course, you’ll still have to put everything away once it’s delivered, and you may not be happy with the quality of fresh fruit and vegetables they’ve selected for you, but it does save you a lot of time. (She tells about her own experience).

5. Addicted to Shopping. But there is a number of problems connected with shopping. Some people get such decease as kleptomania. Others cannot live without buying at least one thing a day, they become shopaholics.

I. Almost all of us get some kind of pleasure from shopping. We might feel good about going out to buy something for someone we love, or we might want to reward ourselves after a week of hard work. For some people, though, shopping becomes a problem. They feel a strong need to buy and often spend large amount of money on things they don’t need, or even possibly that they already have. Finding the money to do shopping can even get them in trouble with the law. These people are addicted to shopping.

A. Some experts believe that events in your childhood can cause shopping addiction. As children it’s very important to all of us to feel important to our parents and that we are free to express our emotions. When we don’t have that, we often look for other ways to make ourselves feel better. Shopping addicts usually get a powerful feeling of comfort and satisfaction at the moment they hand the money over. In general, though, the enjoyment has disappeared by the time they get home from a trip. They might feel bad about wasting money and hide the things they’ve bought, or even destroy them.

G. Serious financial problems are often the result of shopping addiction. Very few of us can afford to spend money on things we don’t need and it’s not long before the credit card bills start to get out of control. Some addicts may even steal to make sure they can afford the next shopping trip.

It’s not easy to get over shopping addiction. It seems that the best treatment involves finding the real reason behind the behavior, such as childhood memories or difficulties in your present life. Once you understand the cause, then you can deal with it differently. For example, if the shopping addiction comes from feeling unimportant, you need to find other ways of making yourself feel good, such as learning a new skill or helping other people in some way. Many shopping addicts manage to rebuild their lives, but it’s not easy, and the shops are still just a short bus ride away.

Physical ex.: Look at your right neighbor. Look at your left neighbor. Look at the lamps. Look at the floor. Shake your hands. Shake your heads. Touch the clever pupil.

  1. Advertisement. But there is one more problem connected with shopping – it’s advertisement. Adverts are everywhere. There are hoardings in the streets, leaflets in your letter box, jingles on the radio, commercials on TV, brochures in shops glossy ads in magazines and famous faces on the sides of buses. Advertising is a huge industry that uses emotions, logic, snobbery, beauty, music, truth and lies to make you spend your money. But do adverts influence you?

S. Of course adverts influence us. If they didn’t, the companies wouldn’t spend so much money on them. Just think of the power of a good slogan. Something like “Just Do It!” fixes a brand name in people’s minds and so that’s the brand they choose in the shops.

O. I prefer a lot of the adverts on TV to the programmes. I like the funny one the best. But they don’t influence me when I go shopping. I always buy the same brands.

K. Some people say adverts don’t influence them at all, but they are forgetting about subconscious effect. When you are in the supermarket and you pick a product off the shelf, it’s probably because you’ve heard of the brand name or seen the logo, and you feel you can trust it. That’s the effect of advertising.

A. Adverts influence me, but in a negative way. I hate adverts, especially those repetitive ones you get on the radio. If an advert irritates me, I make sure I never buy the product it’s advertising. Apart from that, I always choose the cheapest products I can find whether I’ve seen an advertisement or not.

S. Unfortunately, adverts influence not just the things people buy, but also the way they behave. A lot of the deaths and injuries on our roads are caused by advertising campaigns that portray cars as a symbol of power and speed and encourage people to drive too fast.

L. If an advert gives me some useful information about the product, then, of course, I’m more likely to buy it. I always study all the leaflets you get from shops before I buy anything so that I can compare the prices. That way I get the best deal and save money.

7. Let’s go shopping!

Your task was to imagine you want to open the shop. What would your shop be like? How would you make it attractive for the customers?

The first one is “ToVey”. The word goes to Vika & Sonya. The girls give a presentation of their shop and then a short scene goes (Lena buys a cup of tea).

The second one is “Anastasya’s”. The word goes to Nastya & Nastya. The girls give a presentation of their shop and then a short scene goes (Sveta buys a pair of high hills).

The third one is “Your Hobby”. The word goes to Gregory & Artyom. The boys give a presentation of their shop and then a short scene goes (Darina buys a computer game).

The pupils explain which of these shops is more attractive for them and why.

  1. Conclusion.

To sum up, let’s remember the great and bad sides of shopping.

And do you remember the beginning of our lesson? It has begun with the cinquain about shopping. Can you write an example of your own cinquain? Try doing it.

What do you think of our lesson? Do you like it? Give your opinion in a cinquain.
