Comments

1 if we use Past Simple and Past Continuous in one sentence, the action started earlier the other action will be Past Continuous (that’s why action #1), the action closer to the present will be Past Simple (that’s why action #2).

Ex. When my Mum came in to my bedroom, I was studying Geography.

2 if we use Past Simple and Past Perfect in one sentence, the action finished before another action will be Past Perfect (that’s why action #1), the action closer to the present will be Past Simple (that’s why action #2).

Ex. I had finished my homework before I went to the cinema yesterday evening.

3 When we don’t know what to use: Past Simple or Present Perfect as both of them tell about a finished action, they differ only when we mention TIME (Past Simple ) or RESULT (Present Perfect) in the sentence.

Ex. Did you go to Rome last year? No, I didn’t. (Past Simple) – we ask about an exact TIME. Maybe that person has been to Rome 2 times before but he couldn’t go last year.

and

Have you been to Rome? Yes, I have. (Present Perfect) – we ask him JUST about RESULT, but not about an exact time.
