London
London is really an old city. It is the capital of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The river Thames is a jewel of the city. London is situated on the river Thames, which is suitable for navigation all the year round. It is situated on a 1,580 square kilometers. London is a cosmopolitan city. People of different races and nationalities, cultures and religions live there. It is quite natural that over 300 different languages are spoken here. London itself and its suburbs make up Greater London and its population is about 11 million people. Capital is a vast financial center of the country. The city divides into 33 parts. Capital consists of three parts; the City, the West Est and West End.
The City is the heart of London. The City is in the center, but it is only a small area of it. This part is the business and commercial sector of the capital. There are many offices and firms here. The Bank of England is in the City. The area of the City is about a square mile. Only five thousand people the live in the City. The City are crowded with more than a million people who come there to work.
West End is the richest district of London. English celebrities live here. The best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses situated there. The famous attractions consist of Westminster Abbey, Westminster Yard with Tower’s Clock. The city arranged on meridian of zero. The historical and administrative center of London is Westminster. Another place of interest is Buckingham Palace. It’s the residence of the Queen. The underground is the oldest in the world. There are the Houses of Parliament in the Palace of Westminster. Big Ben is the famous clock. It is situated here too. Westminster Abbey is a wonderful church. It is almost 1000 years old. There are memorials to Shakespeare, Burns, Byron, and Longfellow in the Poet’s corner. The district of London called Soho is famous for its restaurants. There are many offices of the biggest film companies too.
The poorest district of the capital is the East End. The Thames is a natural boundary between the West End and the East End of London. The East End used to be a purely working district where working-class families lived. But it is very important for the country, because the Port of London is situated here. It is a district of docks, factories, poor little houses and narrow streets. Lots of old houses have no modern conveniences. They are damp, dirty and dark. The East End is in many ways the "real" London. Those who live in the East End are often called Cockneys, i. e. true Londoners. They have got their own peculiar dialect and accent.
Today, the East End is known for its mixture of cultures. This is because the area has always been a place where the poor and the immigrants went to live when they could not afford to live within London. Tourists visit to see a street art and graffiti tour in the East End. East London has been home to some of the most influential graffiti artists in Europe.
The climate of the Great Britain is medium – maritime. It is warm in summer, and not very cold in winter. The snowfalls are rare.
A great number of places of interest attract attention of tourists from all over the world. The best of learning about London is to visit it.
