New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world.

New York Harbor on the Atlantic coast of the Northeastern United States, New York City consists of five boroughs:
Manhattan (1) ,Brooklyn(2), Queens(3), The Bronx(4), and Staten Island(5).

With a 2009 estimated population approaching 8.4 million residents distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York City is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.

New York traces its roots to the 1624 founding of New Amsterdam as a trading post by Dutch colonists. The city and its surrounds came under English control in 1664, and was renamed New York after the English King Charles II granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.It has been the country's largest city since 1790.

The original Manhattan Chinatown attracts throngs of tourists to its bustling sidewalks and retail establishments. New York City is also home to world-class universities such as Columbia University, New York University and Fordham University.

New York City is composed of five boroughs. Each borough is coextensive with a respective county of New York State as shown below. (Part2) Throughout the boroughs there are hundreds of distinct neighborhoods, many with a definable history and character to call their own.
If the boroughs were each independent cities, four of the boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx) would be among the ten most populous cities in the United States.
