The Wild West
Read the text and complete the puzzle with the words from it.
Western films are rather popular in the world. In those films the American West is described as a rough but exciting place to live. The generous and good-tempered people are shown as honest, hard-working cowboys who live alone in the wild. They are handsome, strong and skilled riders. By the end of the film the evil man is always either arrested or killed. The town is saved and the brave cowboy rides victoriously off into the sunset.
But the American West wasn’t really like the one shown in the films. Over the years a myth has been created by movie directors. That is a myth that everybody wants to believe in.
In reality, the American West was an extremely boring place. The majority of people who lived there were hardworking farmers and herdsmen. Their farms were isolated and neighbours didn’t meet for weeks. As the land was cultivated and shops, pubs, and big houses were built, people moved in to new born towns. As in all towns, there were criminals but most of people were honest and hard-working.
When gold was discovered in California in 1848, thousands of people went there to get fortune. Most men didn’t get rich as they found a little gold and then spent all their money in the many bars that had been opened. There were gunfights and men were killed. However, this type of life was not typical for the area.
In fact, the cowboy, who plays such an important role in all westerns, lived in the American mid-west only for about 20 years, from 1870 to 1890. And even during that period of time, the life of a cowboy was very dull and uninteresting. Most days were spent in the saddle, rounding up cattle and struggling against the danger of heat, cold, and hostile Indians-Native Americans.
It didn’t look like in many Hollywood versions.
