The city of Washington (Washington, D.C) - a place where the riches of the American history, its culture and a heritage are concentrated.

Geographical position
The city of Washington - capital of the United States of America. It is located in district of Columbia, on river bank Potomac and Virginia and Maryland borders on states. Washington has been based on July, 16th, 1790 under plans of the engineer of P.S.Lanfana. Thanks to it Washington has got an accurate lay-out of streets and an avenue. During Anglo-American war the capital has been burnt, and after short time is built up again.

Climate
Climate in Washington is subtropical, damp. In winter the average temperature of air fluctuates from 0°C to +5°C, in summer from +15°C to +21°C. Precipitations are frequent enough, about 970 mm a year, basically in the form of a rain. Snow even drops out seldom in winter and quickly thaws.
The population
The population of Washington makes more than 650 thousand persons, with suburbs - about 4 million persons. Among ethnic groups which live in capital, Europeans of white race - natives of the various countries Western and the Eastern Europe prevail.
Sights
The White House , the USA president’s residence is in the city centre. It is a private residence in English style of 18 centuries, with the well-known lawn before it. In the White House there are not only living rooms, but also working premises, including the well-known Oval office where the president holds the major meetings. The White House is opened for visiting daily, except holidays.

The Capitol located on Capitol Hill , is the building of the Congress of the USA in which Senate sessions take place . The Capitol is the political centre of the USA, the American government is located here . Besides, the Capitol is the geographical centre of District of Columbia.

The Lincoln Memorial has been constructed in honour of the sixteenth US president Abraham Lincoln, is located in the east part of park of the Esplanade, in the centre of Washington.

D.Washington's Monument is a 169-metre obelisk in the centre of Moll, opposite to the White House, devoted to the memory of the first US president George Washington. It is the highest construction of the city.
The National Museum of aeronautics and astronautics represents a remarkable collection of planes, spaceships and documents on aeronautics and astronautics stories.
Congress library is one of the largest libraries in the world. 26 000 000 books are stored in it, more than 36 000 000 manuscripts, cards, photos, and also archives of 23 US presidents. The building of the library is a work of fine art.

The National gallery of arts is an art gallery, the collection of which plates out even among high quality collections of other American museums.
The Washington National Cathedral, constructed in Gothic style, is the largest Catholic temple in the Western hemisphere. The cathedral is well-known for the gargoyles, stained-glass windows and surrounding gardens.
The park of Constitution
The park is broken into the areas of 16,2 hectares on a place of buildings of the former Military department in honour of the Two-hundredth anniversary of independence of the USA. On an islet of park lake is a monument to 56 citizens who have signed the Declaration of independence. It enters into the system of national parks.
Kenilvorf’s Water Gardens
are under the care of service of national parks. The park area is 12 acres and is filled with reservoirs of the most beautiful lilies.

The conclusion
Washington is a very beautiful city which necessarily should be visited. Its sights will amaze you with the beauty! You want to arrive there time and again!
And at the conclusion a little of soldier's humour. All, of course, know, when in honour of whom the American capital is constructed. But hardly to whom is this joke known.
