Past Continuous Past Indefinite  Обозначает длительное действие, продолжавшееся в то время, о котором идет речь. Время может быть обозначено указанием: точного момента или отрезка времени, 2) другого одновременного действия (краткого или длительного). Глаголы в форме Past Continuous на русский переводятся только глаголами несовершенного вида.  Обозначает действие (как факт), имевшее место в прошлом (без уточнения его видовой характеристики, т.е. законченности, незаконченности, протекания во времени, длительности). It was raining the whole day yesterday. He was working at his report from 6 till 9 o’clock in the evening. He was speaking about his project and we were listening to him. I met the girl when I was going home. It rained yesterday. He worked hard at his report, that’s why it is so interesting. He spoke for a long time and we listened to him. I met her many times last week.

Обозначает длительное действие, продолжавшееся в то время, о котором идет речь. Время может быть обозначено указанием:

  • точного момента или отрезка времени,
  • 2) другого одновременного действия (краткого или длительного).
  • Глаголы в форме Past Continuous на русский переводятся только глаголами несовершенного вида.

Обозначает действие (как факт), имевшее место в прошлом (без уточнения его видовой характеристики, т.е. законченности, незаконченности, протекания во времени, длительности).

  • It was raining the whole day yesterday.
  • He was working at his report from 6 till 9 o’clock in the evening.

Read a sentence about the present and then write a sentence about the past. Example: Granny usually gets up at 6.30. Yesterday  she got up at 6.30. she woke up early. she waked Granny usually wakes up early. Yesterday morning she walked in the garden. Granny usually walks in the garden. You can use the past continuous with the past simple. The past continuous shows a longer action/situation. The past simple shows a shorter action which happened during the longer action /situation. I met an old friend when I was walking to work yesterday. = I started walking before I met my friend. 'Walking' is a longer action. When I left the house, it was raining. = It started raining before I left the house. 'Raining' is a longer action. Someone rang the doorbell while I was talking on the phone. = I started talking on the phone before someone rang the doorbell. 'Talking' is a longer action.

You can use the past continuous with the past simple. The past continuous shows a longer action/situation. The past simple shows a shorter action which happened during the longer action /situation.

I met an old friend when I was walking to work yesterday.

= I started walking before I met my friend. 'Walking' is a longer action.

When I left the house, it was raining.

= It started raining before I left the house. 'Raining' is a longer action.

Someone rang the doorbell while I was talking on the phone.

= I started talking on the phone before someone rang the doorbell. 'Talking' is a

longer action.

When Jim arrived, Jackie was cutting the grass.  =Jackie started cutting the grass before Jim arrived. When Jim arrived, Jackie cut the grass. = Jim arrived. Then Jackie started cutting the grass.

When Jim arrived, Jackie was cutting the grass.

=Jackie started cutting the grass before Jim arrived.

When Jim arrived, Jackie cut the grass.

= Jim arrived. Then Jackie started cutting the grass.
