The Wars of the Roses

The Wars of the Roses remain a controversial period of history lasting approximately from 1455 to 1485. The Wars of the Roses was a series of civil wars, fought over the throne of England.

The fighting was between two families that claimed the right to the throne—the House of York and the House of Lancaster.

• King Richard II of England grew up to be a weak and unpopular king, and one of his actions was to send his cousin Henry into exile.

Henry later returned, while Richard was away in Ireland, and took over the country. When Richard returned, Henry tricked him into giving himself up. Richard was put in prison, where he died, and Henry became King Henry IV of England.

King Henry VI

Henry VI ruled for many years, but was considered a bad king by some of his people.

In 1453 Henry became mentally sick and could not rule effectively.

The first battle between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians, at Saint Albans in 1455.

The second phase of the Wars of the Roses was fought between Henry VI of Lancaster and Edward IV of York.

• After Edward's death, his brother  Richard III  claimed the throne. He declared that Edward's son, Edward V, did not have the right to be king.

• Edward V's supporters turned to Henry Tudor, a Lancaster.

• Henry and his forces defeated and killed Richard III at Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485.

• This battle ended the Wars of the Roses. Henry Tudor was crowned Henry VII, and the new Tudor dynasty took over England.
