TRADITIONS & MANNERS
I Read the text & do the following tasks:
British have not so many holidays. They have small number of bank holidays such as New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday, Summer Bank Holiday, Christmas Day & Boxing Day. Only when the UK joined the EEC did New Year’s Day become a public holiday. Patron Saints’ days celebrated as a holiday. They are St. David’s Day(March 1st) in Wales, St. George’s Day(April 23rd ) in England & St. Andrew’s Day(November 30th ) in Scotland. Only Ireland, both North & South, has a holiday on St. Patrick’s Day.
Halloween means “holly evening”, and takes place on 31st October. A lot of people in Britain celebrate it. It is particularly connected with witches & ghosts. At parties people dress up in strange costumes & pretend they are witches.
As for the Christmas Day (25th of December) , many people try to go home and spend the holiday with relatives.
So we can say that British people have some traditional holidays but they are not so many and they have their peculiarities.
