After middle school or junior high, the students go to high school. The last grade of high school is 12th grade. If students go to middle school, high school is 4 years (9th, 10th, 11th and 12th). If students go to junior high, high school is three years (10th, 11th and 12th). Compulsory courses may include English, mathematics, foreign language, physical education, art, music, natural sciences, and social studies. However, students can still choose the level of their classes and elective subjects with the help of their parents and a school guidance counselor. Students receive a diploma after they graduate from high school. Then American students may go to college or university.
