Christmas traditions in England and Russia. What are the sameness and the difference?

Every country has its own customs and traditions. And one of the strongest traditions for Christians is Christmas.

• All holidays are of interest, but the most mysterious is Christmas. There are a lot of convinced that Russian Christmas has no differences from Christmas in English-speaking countries.

• Let's learn in details the features of Christmas celebrations in Russia and England, to compare, to identify common features and differences .

In Russia they celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January and in Great Britian they celebrate it on the 25th of December.

• The discrepancy between the date of the celebration of the Nativity of the various churches at the present time due to the fact that some churches use the Julian calendar, the 25th of December, which corresponds to the 7-th of January in the Gregorian calendar.

The word "Christmas" comes from the words "Christ's Mass" that is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This holiday means the beginning of the New Year and the new life.

• It is great to walk in the city streets before Christmas. Everywhere you can see slogans "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year".

• Christmas Day is the greatest holiday. It is interesting to visit the shops before this holiday. There are a lot of nice Christmas cards and presents there. People like this holiday very much and prepare for it beforehand.

• They buy presents for each other, try to send Christmas cards for their relatives and friends. In early days Romans gave good luck presents to their friends such as fruit, pastry or gold on New Year's Day. So the tradition of giving presents comes from those times.

• For many years in Britain the day to give presents was on the 26th of December and not Christmas Day as it is today. Now we know the 26th of December as Boxing Day because in the Middle Ages that was the day when the priests opened alms boxes and gave to the poor.

• Now children hang socks, called Christmas stockings, at the end of their beds or the fireplace and wait for Santa Claus to come down the chimney to bring them presents.

• The tradition of giving Christmas cards is not of Christian origin. Various people have claimed to be the inventor of the first Christmas card. William Egley is most likely to be that man. In 1842 he designed his own Christmas card and sent it to one hundred friends of his.

• English people celebrate this holiday with the evergreen tree — Christmas tree.

• A Christmas tree stands in everybody's living room at Christmas, giving joy and happiness to everybody. There is usually a silver star surrounded by tiny lights on the very top of the tree. Silver bells, tinsel and sparkling lights hang on the branches. Around the base of the tree there are usually gifts and toys.

• Mistletoe, usually hung up as a Christmas decoration has been a symbol of love. Holly is a well-known Christmas decoration today. The legend says that Christ wore a crown of holly thorns before his death.

• Now every year on Christmas British people are sent a huge fir tree from Norway which stands in Trafalgar Square, in the centre of London. .

• The traditional dinner on Christmas is a turkey and a pudding.

English-speaking people love the tradition of celebrating Christmas or X-mas.

Christmas is one of the brightest Christian holidays in Russia.

• In Russia Christmas was celebrated in the 10th century. It is always mentioned with reverence.

The night before Christmas from the 6th to the 7th of January and before the nineteenth of January called Christmastide. This event is preceded by many days of fasting, during which it is forbidden to eat certain foods.

• And only with the appearance the first star in the sky, the symbol of the star of Bethlehem, Christmas eve post ended.

• Usually the first dish which in this day Christians ate was the so-called sochivo - wheat or rice porridge with honey.

On Christmas night, they opened the door wide and invited to the festive Board any passerby who was walking past, even if they were homeless beggars.

• According to ancient legend, it was believed that his image may be hiding Christ himself.

• Christmas is always accompanied by colorful folk customs.
• There was popular Christmas divination.

• With eve connected "the custom of caroling” - walking on the homes of children and youth with songs and good wishes.

• The youth started to walk around the village, singing Christmas songs and praising the Holy feast.

• So, Christmas is a lovely holiday for all the people in Great Britain and Russia. I love this wonderful holiday. Christmas is my lovely holiday. I think that people in our world love this fantastic holiday too.
