To infinitive

To infinitive

To infinitive is used:   To express purpose Ex. She went out to buy some milk. After certain verbs ( advise, agree, appear, want, decide, expect, hope, promise, refuse, etc.) Ex. He wanted to go home.

To infinitive is used:

  • To express purpose

Ex. She went out to buy some milk.

  • After certain verbs ( advise, agree, appear, want, decide, expect, hope, promise, refuse, etc.)

Ex. He wanted to go home.

After certain adjectives (happy, angry, lucky, glad, etc.) Ex. He was glad to see her. After question words (where, how, what, who, which, but not after why) Ex. Do you know where to meet him ?

After would like, would love, would prefer (to express specific preference) Ex. I would like to drink some milk. After nouns Ex. It’s a pleasure to see you.

After too/enough constructions Ex. He is too short to reach the top shelf .  He is not tall enough to reach the top shelf. with it+be+adjective+of+object  ex. It was nice of him to remember my birthday.

With only to express negative results Ex. He called me only to say that he would be late.

The infinitive without to is used: After modal verbs Ex. You must study English. After had better/ would rather Ex. I would rather have stayed in yesterday . After make, let, see, hear, feel + object Ex. I made him apologize. But in the passive form: Be made/be heard/be seen+ to infinitive Ex. He was made to apologize.

The infinitive without to is used:

  • After had better/ would rather

Ex. I would rather have stayed in yesterday .

  • After make, let, see, hear, feel + object

Ex. I made him apologize.

But in the passive form:

Be made/be heard/be seen+ to infinitive

Ex. He was made to apologize.
