Темa урока: «Penalties».

Тип урока: Деловая игра. Урок-суд.

Цель урока: Ознакомить студентов с судебной системой США, организовать употребление ЛЕ по теме « Penalties» на уровне предложения, межфразового единства; организовать диалогическую речь по теме.

Средства обучения: раздаточный материал, магнитофон, диск для аудирования, плакат на доске, мантия судьи.

Ход урока:

І. Актуализация опорных знаний.

Teacher: Good morning students! Nice to see you! Today we`ll have an unusual lesson-game “In the courtroom”. It will be devoted to “Penalties”. What does this word mean?

Student 1: Legal punishment for a crime.

Student 2: If a person commits a crime he must be arrested and punished for it according to the law.

T: The epigraph to our lesson is written on the board: Crime doesn`t pay.

Explain the meaning of this proverb.

Yes that`s right. If a person does something illegal he will be punished.

And now let`s consider types of punishment: На доске

-Bail(залог) to release smb. on bail

-Fine(штраф)

-Probation parole(освобождение досрочно на испытательный термин)

-Hard labour

-Suspended sentence(условный срок)

-5 year imprisonment(заключение на 5 лет)

-Life imprisonment(пожизненное заключение)

-Community service(общественные работы)

-Death penalty (смертная казнь)

ІІ. Организация употребления лексики на уровне предложения и межфразового единства.

T: Take cards with the words and make up sentences.

T: Now divide into groups. I`ll give you the articles about different crimes. Your task is to agree or disagree with the penalties,if they were fair or unfair(работа с карточками)

Have you heard about the latest crime? Was Tina Squires a famous pop-star?

As you know Tina`s murderer hasn`t been sentenced yet. Have you heard about this case?

S3: Yes…

Now let`s listen to the radio and get to know more about it. Detective Marlowe investigated the case. Be ready to answer the following questions:

• Where and when was Tina murdered?

• Who called the police?

• How many suspects were there?

• What motives did they have?(working with cards)

Let`s imagine that we are in the courtroom and see the trial with our own eyes. Who can we see in the court?

S4: The Judge, the Jury box (присяжные заседатели), the accused(обвиняемый), suspects(подозреваемый), the witness` box, prosecutor and the public gallery. Please take your places.

Judge: Court shall rise!

Secretary: Bobby Davis is accused in the murder of Tina Squires.

Bobby: I didn`t kill her!!! That wasn`t me! I swear!!!!!!

Judge: Order in the court!

Prosecutor: Mr. Davis tell us what did you do that evening? Why did you go to the dinner party?

Bobby: Tina invited me and I accepted the invitation. Nicola and I were about to leave the party. A few minutes earlier I had argued with Tina. She was crying. Then I heard Billy shouting from the terrace. When we got there Tina was dead and Dahlia has already called the police.

Pros: Who did you go there with?

Bobby: I went to the party with an actress Nicola Goodfellow.

Pros: Why did you argue with Tina Squires after the party.

Bobby: We argued because I came with Nicola. She couldn`t accept that. She kept on calling me.

Pros: So, that`s why you killed her?

Bobby: I didn`t do that. I swear!!!!

Pros: Well, tell us about your hobby.

Bobby: Hmm, it may seem an unusual hobby but I collect guns…

Pros: And you used one of your guns that night…

Bobby: No, no. I didn`t.

Pros: Your Majesty, I have no questions.

Secretary: Nicola Goodfellow is invited.

Pros: What`s your profession?

Nicola: I`m an actress.

Pros: Who invited you to the party?

Nicola: Bobby Davis.

Pros: What are the relations between you and Bobby Davis?

Nicola: We are dating.

Pros: What do you remember about that night?

Nicola: We were putting on our coats when someone started shouting so we ran to the terrace. Tina was dead. It was the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I screamed.

Pros: Did you know Tina personally?

Nicola: No. It was the first time I saw her.

Secretary: Billy Squires is invited.

Pros: Mr. Squires did you get on well with your sister?

Billy: Yes, Tina always helped me if I had problems with the money.

Pros: And why did you have problems?

Billy: I sometimes play in casinos and one day I lost much money. Tina helped me.

Pros: So you needed her money. Did she always give you the money?

Billy: Not always. Last time she decided not to give me any money.

Pros: Are you the only brother of Tina Squires?

Billy: Yes, I am.

Pros: So you will inherit all her fortune. Tell me what do you remember about that night?

Billy: I needed to breath in fresh air so went out to the terrace, at first I thought there was nobody there but then I saw Tina. I was surprised to see her on the terrace because I thought she had gone to her bedroom after the argument with Bobby. When I got nearer I saw she was dead. I started shouting.

Pros: Do you know who killed your sister?

Billy: Bobby Davis!!!

Pros: No questions…

Secretary: The next witness is Christine Cross.

Pros: Did you know Tina?

Chris: Yes, I did. I was her manager. I knew everything about my boss.

Pros: Tell us about her personal life. Who could kill her?

Chris: Well I don`t know… She was arguing with Bobby all the time.

Pros: How many people were present on the party?

Chris: Not many. Just her friends, acquaintances and her brother.

Pros: Why did she fire you? Had you stolen her money?

Chris: Oh, no. I hadn`t.

Pros: But we have the evidence that you had done it!!!

Chris: Well, that`s true but I gave it back and Tina started looking for a new manager.

Pros: Tell us what happened that night?

Chris: I was reading a newspaper looking for a new job actually and I heard Billy shouting and a woman screaming so I went to the terrace and there she was lying on the terrace.

Pros: I have no questions.

Secretary: Delia Adams is invited.

Pros: Delia what was your job?

Delia: I was Tina`s personal assistant. I did everything for her: made schedule for her, helped her on the concerts and was like her mother but… she underpaid me. I think.

Pros: Tell us about Tina`s last song.

Delia: Last Christmas Tina had the biggest hit number 1 song. Everyone thought that Tina had written the song herself but in fact I had written it. And Tina had stolen it from me. She had promised to give me half the money but she hadn`t kept the promise.

Pros: Mrs. Adams what happened that night? Were you in the apartment?

Delia: I haven`t finished answering Tina`s e-mail so I left the party early and went to my office which is directly upstairs Tina`s apartment. I was working when I heard a shot. I ran to the terrace and found Tina dead. I called the police straight away.

Pros: Mrs. Adams you couldn`t hear the shot because the murderer used the handgun with a silencer.

Delia: Oh, I`m not sure it was a shot…really.

Pros: And now everything is clear … We know who killed the famous pop-star Tina Squires. It was Delia Adams. You killed her because she had stolen your song and hadn`t paid you…You called the police and told that somebody had killed her. Your mistake was the shot.

Your Majesty, now we know who is the real murderer. I have no questions.

(Присяжные передают судье решение суда. Судья встаёт и обьявляет приговор.)

Judge: Delia Adams, stand up. You are accused in the murder of Tina Squires and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

Teacher: Now girls let`s come back to the classroom and summarize the lesson. Now we know everything about this case. Look through the article one more time and complete it(студенти завершают статью рассказывая о суде и приговоре)

Bobby, a pop-idol.

Tina and Bobby had dated but they argued all the time so Bobby left her for the new girlfriend Nicola . Tina didn`t accept that Bobby didn`t love her. She kept on calling him. Bobby didn’t like that. He has a violent personality and he really loves guns.

Nicola Goodfellow, actress. Nicola knew that Tina had had a love affair with Bobby. She didn`t want to go to the dinner party because she was jealous with Tina. She only agreed to go because Bobby had insisted.

Delia Adams, personal assistant. Last Christmas Tina had the biggest hit number 1 song. Everyone thought that Tina had written the song herself but in fact Delia had written it. And Tina had stolen it from her. She had promised to give her half the money but she hadn`t kept the promise.

Billy, Tina`s brother. He loves casinos but unfortunately he never wins. Tina had always given him all the money he needed but last week she decided not to give him any more. Billy is Tina`s only brother and he will inherit her fortune.

Christine Cross, Tina`s manager. Tina had discovered that she had stolen a lot of money from her. Christine knew that Tina had started looking for a new manager.
